Futuramas Bender Bending Rodríguez & 9 Other Greatest TV Robots

Mankind has dreamt of robots since technological advancements began. Industrialization made robots a reality, but these were not the glamorous, stylish, and sentient robots that sci-fi promised. Robots back then were heavy clunky plant robots that built cars and assembled food.

As technology improved, so did sci-fi’s hope for robots. The popularity of the internet also gave rebirth to the ideas of robot companions and friends in the future. As technology improved, robots on screen became more sophisticated, as writers began to grabble once again with fears and hopes for robots, from their ability to eradicate humans in the future to their ability to love humanity and become loyal companions.

10 Bender Bending Rodríguez (Futurama)

Built in Tijuana, Mexico, Bender Bending Rodríguez is a robot first, an alcoholic second, a sexy Latino lover third, and a criminal fourth. Built to bend things, Bender has a secret dream to become a folk musician. As always, however, he reserves an outward shell of bad boy charisma and charm. Voiced by John DiMaggio, Bender has grown to become one of the most popular robots in TV history, because he is a hilarious anti-hero with a heart of gold (even if he enslaves and whips his friends to build a giant statue in his honor).

9 Bobert 6B (The Amazing World Of Gumball)

An intelligent robot with no concept of nuance or emotion, Bobert 6B is Gumball and Darwin’s classmate. A generally lax and chill classmate, when in “combat mode”, Bobert can transform into one of the deadliest weapons known to mankind, complete with guns, lasers, the ability to discharge energy that melts physical objects, a cannon, and rocket launchers.

In earlier seasons, Bobert finds it difficult to understand his classmates’ emotions and to connect with them. He also wishes he could be a real boy, and Single White Femaled Gumball in one episode, hoping to get the real boy experience.

8 Karen (SpongeBob SquarePants)

Karen is one of TV’s rarest robots that can feel emotions. She loves her husband, Plankton. Described as a nerd by the show’s writers, Plankton decided to create for himself a robot partner, presumably because she would be the only companion smart enough for a crazy inventor. Karen is, naturally, smarter than Plankton, so Plankton often steals her ideas and calls them his. She is a level-headed, logical robot who is frustrated, stuck in a bad marriage to an arrogant scientist. In later seasons, Karen is given wheels so that she can move around.

Essentially a Roomba in a disturbing French maid’s costume, Rosie the Robot is The Jetson’s robot maid. An outdated model of her kind, the Jetsons do not upgrade, because they have grown to love Rosie. Like Bender and Bobert, the humans bonded with Rosie, and treat her like a full human being. Rosie acts like a nanny towards the family, giving them their pills, scolding the kids, and acting like a surrogate parent in the house. For unexplained reasons, Rosie the Robot has a Brooklyn accent.

6 Bumblebee (Transformers)

One of the most popular, and the youngest, Transformer, Bumblebee’s reputation is so far reaching, he was given his own movie in 2018. Bumblebee is a wise-cracking, fun-loving Transformer, known for his yellow coat and black stripes. An extraterrestrial robot superhero, Bumblebee is a member of the Autobots, the good robots protecting the earth from the Decepticons.

In most versions of the show and movie, Bumblebee transforms into a Volkswagen Beetle. The robot understands emotions well and is generally one of the nicest, kindest, and most welcoming robots in TV history.

5 Robot B-9 (Lost In Space)

Series 1A-1998 Class YM-3 Model B-9 General Utility Non-Theorizing Environmental Control Robotic Bion is a weapon from Lost In Space. Robot B-9, like most robots, is super intelligent and very strong. Like Bobert (both of whom share similar names), Robot can also shoot out laser beams. He also fires out electro-force from his claws. Robot B-9 was one of the first popularized robots on TV when Lost In Space aired in 1965. He popularized the use of the robot as an essential character in sci-fi series. Robot B-9 is also one of the few musically-gifted robots, as he loves to sing and play the guitar.

4 Cybermen (Doctor Who)

Technically cyborgs, the Cybermen are a race of alien cyborgs devoid of any emotion. When they invade Earth, they have no problem kidnapping humans and turning them into emotionless Cybermen in an incredibly painful procedure that only Doctor Who can get away with. With their deep, impenetrable black holes for eyes, Cybermen awaken the uncanny in audiences, bringing up the age-old fear of robot-human enmity.

Cybermen look upon the human race with disdain, considering emotions a weakness. They also abhor individuality, believing that they can only survive as a collective. As terrifying as they are, Cybermen deserve praise for being so memorable. Their collective marching, robotic speech, and thirst for conquering humanity has struck fear into the hearts of audiences since their conception.

3 Judy Cooper (K.C. Undercover)

The Coopers are an everyday family of international spies thwarting criminal organizations regularly, as most families do. When Kira Cooper decides she would like another child, she makes a decision every mother does, and brings home a robot sister, Judy, for her children, Ernie and K.C.

Sarcastic and smart, Judy does not seem amiss from most 10-year-old girls. She is named Judy, an acronym for Junior Undercover Digital Youth. Cursed with the weakness of any robot, Judy must learn human emotions and social skills if she is to blend in with her new family and new life.

2 Data (Star Trek: The Next Generation)

The sole survivor of Omnicron Theta, Data is a sentient android who works as the second officer on the Federation starship USS Enterprise-D. Data is one of the first robots to learn human emotions through an addition to his software, proving that robots no longer need to be naturally emotionless. He is a very wise robot, understanding how best to navigate human and emotional problems. Data has a huge computer software system, with 1,000 TB of storage. In addition, Data has stereotypical human weaknesses, include virus attacks and a switch that can turn him off.

1 Tiny (Little Robots)

Tiny, a British stop-motion animated robot is a child robot with a big responsibility. He fixes the robots and machines in his scrap heap, by pulling out tools from the lid in his head. Tiny is one of TV’s most friendly and positive robots. He is so responsible, that he is in charge of time in his scrap heap, making sure to pull the Day-Night lever at exactly the right times every day. A positive role model for robots and humans everywhere, Tiny is also the mayor of Robot World at such a young age. Hopefully, he has enough RAM to process the stress of all his responsibilities.
