Future iPhone Could Feature Mac Pros Cheese Grater Design

Apple might be considering a major revamp to the look of the iPhone series, based on the cheese grater design showcased in a recently published patent. Last year, Apple redesigned its iconic iPhone lineup with a massive twist: square edges. Compared to the rounder designs of the previous generations, the iPhone 12 lineup harkened back to its more prismatic roots.

In 2019, Apple unveiled the new Mac Pro featuring a controversial design. Though the professional desktop packed in a flurry of impressive features inside its frame, the design of the device sparked a lot of comparisons with a cheese grater. Compared to the previous, sleeker generations, the new Mac Pro offered something new for consumers. However, like how new designs usually are, Apple fans were divided on whether or not to accept the cheese grater look.

As reported by Patently Apple, Apple has published a new set of patents previewing a future iPhone with a similar cheese grater look. The patent’s sketches show the iPhone 12’s square design will still be in use, but will include a cavity extending from one edge to other. The edge’s surface will include holes, as expected of a grater design. Another potential design adds a brace inside the phone to increase support, stability (by adding a little weight), and thermal transfer. Like how the Mac Pro’s design was explained, the patent purports that the grater design on the iPhone will help with the smartphone’s cooling.

Is The World Ready For A Cheese Grater iPhone?

Given how the Mac Pro’s grater design was initially received, the smartphone world might not take too kindly to a major revamp of an iconic smartphone line — at least, not at first. Historically, Apple has allowed major iPhone redesigns to linger for a few generations before introducing the next one. Though the squarish profile will still remain (according to the sketch), the grater design constitutes enough of a revamp to fall under the major redesign category.

Recently, the company also published a patent for an upcoming MacBook design featuring deployable feet. Though it also features a new design, the patent furthers Apple’s experiments in passive cooling. Apple is consistently try to find new ways to improve cooling for its devices, potentially allowing for more hardware to be packed inside their frames. That said, a patent doesn’t necessarily indicate a company’s actual plans for products in the future. If anything, it merely indicates the potential developments that Apple appears to be interested in taking for its iPhone series.
