Galactus Found the Ultimate Way to Torture The Silver Surfer

The Silver Surfer is perhaps the best-known herald of the mighty Galactus, who is known throughout the universe as the Devourer of Worlds. It’s the duty of the Surfer to scout out worlds for Galactus to consume – and Galactus does not care if those worlds are inhabited or not, so long as he consumes them in the end. The Surfer eventually freed himself from Galactus’ hold and began life again as a free man – but in Silver Surfer #48, written by Jim Starlin with art by Ron Lim Tom and colors by Ken Bruzenak, the Surfer discovers the horrible price he must pay for aiding in the murder of millions of lives.

The Silver Surfer was freed from his burden at the end of the famous Galactus Trilogy, in which Alicia Masters – girlfriend and later wife of the Fantastic Four’s Thing – convinced him that human life has value, and thus must be defended against his master. Galactus freed the Surfer but forbade him from ever leaving Earth, though this restriction was later lifted. But the Surfer is still gripped with doubt – just how many planets did he provide for the Devourer of Worlds?

In the issue, the Silver Surfer reunites and seeks an audience with Galactus. He recounts a memory in which he met an interplanetary mass murderer who challenged the Surfer’s right to judge him when the past association with Galactus makes him just as guilty. “I aided you in the destruction of hundreds of worlds, abetted the deaths of millions of poor souls” the Surfer says. “Yet I’ve never felt any great guilt over this matter. How can that be?” Galactus reveals that altered the Silver Surfer’s soul so he would be entirely free of guilt and pain for every world consumed. The Surfer is irate, and demands Galactus change his soul back. “UNDO your HANDIWORK, mighty Galactus! Allow me to be the man I should be.” With a warning (summarily ignored by the Surfer), Galactus obliges.

Galactus Found the Ultimate Way to Torture The Silver Surfer

The Surfer is immediately awash in horrifying, overwhelming feelings of guilt, shame and pain. In his mind, he slowly sinks in a pool – an ocean – of the blood of everyone the Surfer has killed through his actions as the herald of Galactus. He is utterly consumed, and Ron Lin Tom’s artwork of the horrified Surfer truly conveys his plight. When the images subside, Galactus offers to change the Surfer’s soul again. “It is not too late, Norrin Radd. What has been done can be reversed.” But the Silver Surfer refuses – his guilt has been hidden from him for too long, and he decides to bear the burden forever.

It must be pointed out that Galactus rarely, if ever, offers to do something that benefits a person for no other reason than to alleviate their pain. The fact that he did points to the respect Galactus feels toward his former herald. Galactus truly holds the Silver Surfer in high regard, saying “Norrin Radd was an honorable man.”
