Galaxy Watch 4 Vs Apple Watch Series 6 How Samsungs New Watch Compares

Samsung’s new Galaxy Watch 4 seems prepared to challenge the leading smartwatch manufacturer and its latest offering, the Apple Watch Series 6. The two have a long competitive history and, in the United States, Apple usually comes out on top. With the new upgrades and added sensors in the Galaxy Watch 4, it will be interesting to compare the top wearables from each and find out which is the best.

Apple announced its Apple Watch Series 6 in September of 2020, bringing a faster S6 processor, brighter always-on display, a new blood oxygen sensor, and an always-on altimeter allowing for a real-time display when climbing. Apple has been focused on health uses for the Apple Watch from early on and built on that emphasis with the Apple Watch Series 4, which introduced ECG capability to a smartwatch. Software updates allow for sleep tracking, something that had been missing previously.

Samsung’s Galaxy Watch 4 brings big changes to its smartwatch, most notably that it now runs Wear OS with special user interface adjustments to better match Samsung’s ecosystem and the particular hardware features of its watch. There’s a rotating bezel that makes it easy to adjust settings and move around the operating system, as well as all of the Samsung apps and features that users know and love. Not to mention, more apps will be available and integration with Android phones should be better with this operating system update. Tizen wasn’t abandoned, rather merged with Wear OS, bringing the best of both. With Samsung gaining more apps, it closes the software gap when compared to the Apple Watch.

Which Smartwatch Is Best?

One of the challenges when comparing Apple’s technology with any other manufacturer is the integration. Apple products work best together and typically have limited connectivity with mobile technology made by others. That means an Apple Watch requires an iPhone for setup and some features are limited when an iPhone isn’t nearby. Android phone users simply cannot connect to an Apple Watch. Samsung develops an iPhone app that can connect to a Galaxy Watch but so many functions are limited that few would rely on this combination for health and fitness tracking. By and large, iPhone owners choose an Apple Watch, and Samsung owners pick a Galaxy Watch. However, the case can be made for switching ecosystems, meaning both smartphones and smartwatches. The Galaxy Watch 4 starts at just $250 for the small, Wi-Fi-only model, which is a far more affordable price than the cheapest Apple Watch Series 6, at $399.

Apple doesn’t offer a foldable phone yet and the combination of a Galaxy Z Fold 3 or Z Flip 2 and a Galaxy Watch 4 has become more intriguing. The Galaxy Watch 4 matches every biometric sensor that Apple includes in its Apple Watch Series 6 and adds a body composition sensor as well as a blood pressure measurement. It should be noted that these blood pressure readings are not currently available within the US, most likely pending regulatory approval. Samsung did not explain why, but did list several countries that do allow use of the feature, including several EU countries and the UK. With a 5 nanometer Exynos 920 processor, it should be as fast as the Apple Watch, making the choice between these two harder than ever. For Android users, the Galaxy Watch 4 is clearly the better choice and even Apple fans might be tempted to switch now that the wearable software gap is closing and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch is now much faster.
