The Galaxy Z Flip 3 looks like a worthy foldable phone with plenty of selling points, but how durable is Samsung’s new $1,000 flip phone?

Samsung’s latest flip phone is the Galaxy Z Flip 3 and while the raw specifications and design will matter, so will durability considering this is a phone that flips open and closed. Ever since the debut of its first foldable smartphone, the company has struggled with making its pricey folding phones sturdy and has had to weather a few bad press storms due to engineering flaws. The first-gen Galaxy Z Fold, in particular, was plagued by a plethora of issues, especially around the foldable panel’s longevity and seemingly fragile hinge.
The Galaxy Z Flip and its 5G-ready successor made some positive strides, but even with a clever dust-warding mechanism for the hinge, the pricey foldable display remained vulnerable to damage caused by dust particles that could make their way inside via the exposed hinge. On top of this, the lack of any water resistance might have further dissuaded some from investing in an expensive phone that needs to be handled in a delicate fashion and protected from the elements. However, with its third attempt at foldable phone glory, it appears that Samsung is better prepared with the Galaxy Z Flip 3.
Samsung has employed what it calls Armor Aluminum to make the Galaxy Z Flip 3’s frame. The company claims it to be the strongest material ever used for making a Galaxy smartphone, and has extended the same courtesy to the Galaxy Z Fold 3 as well. A layer of Corning’s Gorilla Glass Victus is there to protect the delicate glassy portions of the phone against scratches and accidental drops. Furthermore, Samsung has applied a stretchable PET protective film on top of the inner foldable panel that also does the task of insulating it from liquid damage. Plus, the main screen panel layers are said to have been strengthened this time, offering up to 80-percent higher durability than Samsung’s previous foldable phones.
The Sturdiest Foldable Samsung Has Ever Made
The biggest upgrade from a durability standpoint is the IPX8 certification, which finally brings some form of waterproofing to Samsung’s new foldable phones. The electronics giant claims that the Galaxy Z Flip 3 can survive immersion at a maximum depth of 1.5 meters for up to 30 minutes. This is not IP68 certification, so dust protection is questionable, but the phone will be able to brush off occasional water splashes without frying the internal circuitry. Just avoid testing its limits with some underwater videos.
In order to achieve the IPX8 rating for the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Samsung has relied on the usual solutions to protect ingress points such as rubber gaskets and double-sided tape. However, the secret ingredient is CIPG (Cured In Place Gasket), a material that is injected in the form of liquid between moving parts that eventually turns into solid on exposure to air. The CIPG offers a higher degree of movement when used between moving flexible controller boards, while also protecting the fragile internal circuits from liquid exposure. Overall, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, alongside its pricier Fold sibling, is one of the sturdiest foldable phones out there, at least going by Samsung’s claims.
