Game Of Thrones 5 Most Graphic Storylines In The Show (& 5 That Are Worse In The Books)

Game of Thrones is one of the most popular TV shows of all time. The series helped kickstart a new golden era of TV, captivating the world in the process and introducing a whole new generation to the fantasy genre. The show was built on a reputation of extreme violence, sexual imagery, and political intrigue, all of which were also present in varying degrees in the book series it was based on, a Song of Ice and Fire. That being said, due to the nature of the two mediums, some scenes were more disturbing in the books and some in the show, with some scenes even being removed entirely from the TV series adaptation.

This article will list 5 of the most graphic scenes in the show and 5 in the books.

10 Show: Hardhome

While fans of the book series almost unanimously say that the book series is far better than the TV series, there is one aspect of the show that fans argue is better than the books – Hardhome. In the books, we hear about what happened in Hardhome from a letter sent to Jon Snow, but we never see it.

In the TV show, however, we see the full extent of the horror. We see hordes of wights crashing from a cliff face, we see terrified humans being slaughtered, and we see the epic staredown between Jon and the Night King.

9 Book: Brienne vs Biter

In the TV show, Brienne faces off against the Hound, with Brienne besting him in combat and leaving him to die of his wounds. However, this scene did not occur in the books. Instead, Brienne had a gruesome battle with Biter, one of the outlaws imprisoned with Jaqen H’ghar.

Biter throws himself on Brienne and she is unable to push him off, despite countless punches and slashes. Here, he bites off a chunk of her cheek, chewing it and swallowing in front of Brienne. It was only for Gendry that Biter was saved, though it would take a while before Brienne would heal as the bite became infected and almost killed her.

8 Show: Oberyn’s Death

While the book did a gruesome job of explaining the events of the battle between Oberyn and Gregor ‘the Mountain’ Clegane, the visuals and sound effects provided by the TV series’ retelling of the trial by combat certainly left scars on the audience.

During the fight, despite having the upper hand, Oberyn fails to deliver the killing blow to the Mountain as the Red Viper wants justice for what the Mountain did to his sister. This gives Clegane the opportunity to pull Oberyn to the ground and crush his head.

7 Book: Blue Bard’s Torture

This character didn’t appear in the TV show, but it was easily one of the most disturbing scenes in a Song of Ice and Fire. Blue Bard, or Wat, is a singer that works for House Tyrell and is incredibly popular in King’s Landing. However, Cersei despises Margaery and wants to kick her out of the capital so she plans to make it look like Margaery has been having affairs.

She kidnaps Blue Bard and, using Qyburn, tortures the singer. The torture is incredibly gruesome, we see the Bard slowly begin to make up lies in order to be released from his torture. The book says that by the end of his torture, he is missing an eye, most of his teeth, a nipple, and his boots are filled with blood.

6 Show: Red Wedding

The Red Wedding is terrible in the books and the show. The traitorous and deceitful acts of the Lannisters, Freys, and Boltons led to several notable deaths, most notably Robb, Catelyn, and Grey Wind. While the books were shocking, there is one scene in the show that made it worse.

In the books, Robb’s wife Jeyne Westerling was not present at the wedding. However, in Game of Thrones, his pregnant wife (Talisa Maegyr for TV) was present and she was stabbed several times in the belly, in one of the show’s most gruesome scenes.

5 Book: Blackwater

The Battle of Blackwater Bay is one of the most epic moments in both Game of Thrones and a Song of Ice and Fire. Not only do we get to see Tyrion Lannister at his peak during the build-up to Stannis’ attack as he prepares for the assault, but we also get some incredible action.

In the books, though, we see more of the chaos surrounding the battle and how it affects those other than Tyrion. In the moments before Stannis’ arrival, we hear of a riot that led to the rape of Lollys Stokeworth and we see the horrifying damage this inflicted upon her mental state. Further, in the aftermath of the battle, we learn that Tyrion’s nose has been cut off, making him far more scarred than on the TV show.

4 Show: Ramsay’s Death

This one may be considered cheating, as Ramsay has yet to meet his fate in the book series. That being said, it is certainly worth mentioning due to the importance of this incredibly graphic, bloody, and celebrated scene in Game of Thrones season 6.

Ramsay is one of the most despicable characters in the show and, after he lost the Battle of the Bastards, Sansa Stark set his own dogs on him in an act of karmic justice.

3 Book: Lady Hornwood

Game Of Thrones 5 Most Graphic Storylines In The Show (& 5 That Are Worse In The Books)

Much like with Blue Bard, we didn’t see Lady Hornwood in the TV show though mentions of her in the book series certainly helped to further Ramsay Bolton’s infamous reputation. Lady Hornwood lost both her husband and her son during the War of the Five Kings, leading to many suitors trying to marry her for her lands (despite being past child bearing age).

Ramsay Bolton eventually seized Lady Hornwood and forced her to marry him. After this, Ramsay locked her in a tower and didn’t feed her. Lady Hornwood was eventually found dead in the tower, with blood around her mouth and her fingers chewed off.

2 Show: Ramsay’s Torture

Game Of Thrones 5 Most Graphic Storylines In The Show (& 5 That Are Worse In The Books)

In the book, we never see much of Ramsay’s treatment of Theon. Instead, after Theon is captured by Ramsay in the second book, a Clash of Kings, we don’t hear from Greyjoy until a Dance With Dragons. In the show, however, we see the actual damage inflicted by Ramsay.

We see Theon strapped to a cross and we see Ramsay inflicting both mental and physical agony on Theon. The book doesn’t show the torture, leaving it up to the readers’ minds, yet the show reveals exactly the damage Ramsay inflicts.

1 Book: Theon Is Reek

As said in the earlier entry, the book series doesn’t show the torture Ramsay inflicted upon Theon in much detail. However, the aftermath of this torture is far worse in the books. Theon returns in the fifth book, under the alias ‘Reek’. As a consequence, it took a while for readers to realize that Reek was in fact Theon.

Forced to go by the name Reek, Theon has lost several fingers and toes to the torture, as well as several teeth. His hair is white and brittle and he is incredibly thin, with a bloated and painful belly. In one scene, we see Reek eating a rat and savoring the taste. This is truly a harrowing transformation for the character, with the chapters involving Theon being difficult to read due to their disturbing content.
