Game Of Thrones’ Melisandre, or “The Red Woman”, the red priestess constantly whispering in the ears of leaders, is a point of contention for many. At best, fans may be able to laugh at her excessive confidence in the good that will be the result of all of the horrendous deeds she commits. At worst, she’s a hateful, evil character that represents one of the most dangerous characteristics portrayed in the show–blind loyalty.

Melisandre is adamantly insistent that the voice of a god speaks through her, and doesn’t quiet about it even when she comes to face the horrors she has committed for said god. Here are five reasons we might sympathize with her, and five she is simply not forgivable.

10 Sympathetic: She Thought She Was Doing The Right Thing

Even when Melisandre was performing the most despicable acts, she always thought that she was serving the greater good.

She couldn’t see the horror in what she did for what it was–her terrible acts took on the sole representation of what she saw them contributing to in the long run, necessary sacrifices for a grand cause.

9 Unforgivable: Sacrificed The Princess

There are some who would say that no matter what you claim to be doing it for, it’s never okay to hurt a child.

Even in the world of the series, this seems to be true–it is not normal that the princess is murdered, and even causes many of the men to abandon the army.

8 Sympathetic: She Was A Peasant

Melsidandre can come off as high and mighty, but we are sometimes reminded of the fact that she actually began her life as a commoner, living in poverty and squalor.

She clearly knows pain and suffering and had to work her way up to where she is when we know her. This makes her a little bit more human to us, and more understandable in some ways.

7 Unforgivable: She Abused Gendry

Poor Gendry grew up not knowing who he was, simply trying to make his way in the world, then finally thought he found a community but was sold off to Melisandre instead.

Next thing we know he thinks he’s getting lucky with Melisandre and actually going to be treated nicely, but it’s all a trick–she terrifies him and uses him for his blood, then orders his execution when he is no longer of use–luckily, he is saved, but not by her hand.

6 Sympathetic: She Despairs For Her Wrongs

Melisandre’s biggest saving grace in the series is that once she realizes she was wrong for her all of her sacrifices in the name of the Lord Of Light, she feels great guilt for it and grieves her wrongdoings.

This might seem like an obvious enough response and one that shouldn’t call for many congratulations, but in the world of the show, it is not so common.

5 Unforgivable: Blinded By Her Faith

Melisandre could be somewhat pardoned for her terrible actions due to the fact that she misinterpreted the signs of the Lord Of Light, leading her to harm people for a cause that ended up failing, but it’s important to note that excusing her in this way would mean excusing anyone who did something regretful as a result of ignorance.

Blinded or not, Melisandre made the choices she made, just like everyone else.

4 Sympathetic: She Brought Jon Back To Life

Melisandre could easily have refused to help in bringing Jon back to life. She didn’t actually know that he would be of use, or that, as she claimed later, the Lord Of Light intended for him to come back–she only lay claim to this once he actually came back to life.

All the same, she tried to bring him back because she was asked to help, and wanted to be of service.

3 Unforgivable: She Refused Jon’s Wish To Die

Once she brought Jon back to life, Melisandre became fixated on the idea that his destiny was linked with a great plan and that the Lord of Light intended him to return.

Before a battle, Jon requests that Melisandre does not bring him back again if he dies–that she let him go to rest. Melisandre refuses his wish, saying that she will do whatever the Lord desires. This is not only disrespectful, but it doesn’t make sense, seeing as the Lord didn’t tell her to in the first place.

2 Sympathetic: She Helped In The Long Night

Melisandre shows up unannounced and without being asked to aid in the great fight at Winterfell in the final season. Forces are short and all are worried, and while her efforts don’t make a great difference in the fight, she still shows up to help and makes a genuine effort, no strings attached.

This suggests that she really did mean well in her efforts on behalf of the Lord of Light all along, even if in a warped way.

1 Unforgivable: She Remained Stubborn

Someone who has burned a small child at the stake arguably has no standing to ever defend themselves ever again.

Melisandre, however, sees fit to go on preaching about the plans of the Lord of Light, the very same reason she gave for murdering a child, and even if her manner is more subdued and aware of her faults, it seems pretty outlandish for Melisandre to assert any opinion at all following her admittance to guilt.
