Game of Thrones Original Jon Snow Romance Was Even Weirder Than Daenerys

If you felt uncomfortable when Game of Thrones paired up Jon Snow with his secret aunt, things could’ve been a whole lot worse. The final season of Game of Thrones proved controversial for a number of reasons, and the romance between Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen was a relatively small part of that backlash. Their sexual tension bubbled throughout Game of Thrones season 7 and culminated with Jon finally bending the knee for his new Queen to make their alliance official. After both characters suffered ill-fated past relationships, Jon and Daenerys were delighted to finally find happiness together. The audience, on the other hand, watched awkwardly, heads in hands, knowing that Jon’s secret parentage made him Dany’s nephew.

Game of Thrones being what it is, of course, this was far from the first instance of incest in the HBO series. The subject was boldly broached in Game of Thrones’ very first episode with Jaime and Cersei Lannister, whose sibling affair was the worst-kept secret in Westeros. The Targaryens were also famous for in-breeding to keep their bloodline pure. The shock value of the Lannister romance faded significantly as Game of Thrones progressed, perhaps because they were villains who committed plenty of worse crimes over the course of the series, but with the baby-faced protagonist of Jon Snow, the situation was that extra bit more icky.

The original Jon Snow plan was even worse – Kit Harington’s shaggy-haired character was romantically linked with Arya Stark in George R.R. Martin’s first outline for A Song of Ice & Fire. Tormented by their feelings for each other, the eventual reveal of Jon’s true heritage would mean the he and Arya were finally allowed to be together. This storyline might yet play out in Martin’s books, with 2 long-awaited installments of the saga yet to come. But as divisive and cringe-worthy as the angle between Jon and Daenerys was, Martin’s Arya plan would’ve proved far more problematic in live-action.

On one hand, Jon being the son of Rheagar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark would make he and Arya cousins, rather than half-siblings, and marriages between cousins were as common as public executions and sketchy brothels in Westeros. The biggest problem is that Kit Harington and Maisie Williams aren’t the same ages as their characters. The age gap between Jon and Arya in the books is approximately 5 years, but in real life Harington is a full decade older than Williams. Even though Game of Thrones season 8 features nude scenes with an adult Arya, a relationship with Jon would’ve made for a deeply uncomfortable visual, and that’s without considering their family ties. In a strange twist, the actor who plays Gendry is actually only 6 months younger than Kit Harington.

The second problem is indeed the familial aspect. The best case scenario would be for Jon Snow to just not fall for someone he’s related to, but there’s a major difference between Jon and Daenerys (who are thankfully the same age, more or less) falling in love without knowing they’re related and George R.R. Martin’s initial idea of Jon and Arya denying their feelings for each other because they think they’re half-siblings, only to give into romance when the truth is revealed. The latter is a technicality – Jon and Arya were raised as siblings and viewers would’ve had a hard time accepting any other take on their relationship, especially since Jon viewed Arya as a younger sister for his entire life.

Considering the themes at play, it’s amazing Game of Thrones got away with as much incest as it did. Towards the end of the series, many viewers were even rooting for Jaime to end up with Cersei over the villainous, disgusting Euron. But any attempt to foster genuine romance between Jon and Arya would’ve undoubtedly been a step too far, and much harder to accept in live-action than Jon and Dany’s well meaning (albeit woefully misguided) romance.
