Garfield Rights Acquired By Viacom For New Nickelodeon TV Show

Viacom has acquired the Garfield rights for a new Nickelodeon TV show. The long-running comic strip, which focuses on the life of a lazy, sarcastic cat, his owner John Arbuckle and a clueless dog called Odie, has been popular since it debuted in 1976.

Creator Jim Davis has seen his characters’ recognizability grow over time, with the mid-to late 1980’s having been a particularly receptive period for the lasagna eating cat known globally as Garfield. To date, there’s been at least a dozen prime-time animated specials involving John, Garfield and Odie, and two feature length Garfield movies – Garfield: The Movie and Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties were released in 2004 and 2006, respectively. Both films fared quite well at the box office, despite poor reviews – though some might argue that it was Bill Murray, who voiced Garfield in both films, that helped to give the comedies their overall advantage. Another Garfield film is on its way, though to date not much is known about it.

Now, according to The Wrap, Garfield is also getting set to hit TV screens in his own series. The latest news reveals that Viacom is now set to acquire the rights to the Garfield and U.S. Acres franchises, both of which are the brainchild of Davis. Once acquired, children’s network Nickelodeon will begin work on a brand new Garfield TV series – the likes of which will not affect the production of Davis’ weekly comic strip, which will continue to run as before. Said Davis about the new acquisition:

“I’ve always tried to make people laugh with humor that is classic and appealing to both kids and adults. I’m delighted that Garfield is going to be placed in the capable hands of the folks at Nick. They know how to entertain and will be great stewards for the franchise. I am also excited to continue to do the thing that gets me out of bed every morning… the comic strip!”

As of this writing, there’s no indication as to exactly what the new series will be called or what sort of structure it will follow – that is, if each episode will deal with previous events or if each one will be handled as its own, self-contained story. What is known is that the new series will specifically star John, Garfield and Odie. As the world’s most syndicated cartoon strip, with toys, video games, Caribbean Cruises and even an upcoming restaurant to its name, fans are sure to want to see a TV series that’s worthy of the character himself.

Unfortunately, if past efforts are any indication, the Garfield franchise has a rather lackluster track record when it comes to bringing the character to life. The aforementioned movies impressed few, and if Nickelodeon intends to create anything less than a comedic series that can be enjoyed by fans of all ages (not just children), then the new Garfield TV series might not end up being what longtime fans are looking for. At any rate, with both a new film and a TV series on their way, there’s always hope that the lasagna gorging cat and his pals will be set to impress.
