Players who boot up Gears 5 to test out their new Xbox Series X on November 10 will be able to bring professional wrestler Batista into the campaign for the first time. Known to Guardians of the Galaxy fans as Drax, outspoken actor and former WWE World Heavyweight Champion Dave Bautista has long desired to play Marcus Fenix should Gears of War ever hit the big screen. The fan campaign that erupted from this desire caught the attention of the developers at The Coalition, who brought in the Hollywood star to appear as a bonus character in multiplayer. His wrestling finishing move, the Batista Bomb, was added as an in-game finisher in a later update.

Of course, Gears 5 isn’t just graced by the muscle of Evolution as a guest character. The game also came out in concert with the latest Terminator film, meaning that characters ranging from the Terminator endoskeleton to Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor are playable in the game’s various multiplayer modes. Those who’ve purchased Halo: Reach in Halo: The Master Chief Collection can additionally bring in Emile-A239 and Kat-B320 to join in the fight. Each guest character has unique loadouts and skills in certain modes, making them more than just a character skin in most cases.

Batista isn’t just any faceless Spartan or Terminator, and Xbox knows this. As part of the announcement of Gears 5’s Xbox Series X enhancements, Microsoft announced Batista as an alternate character for the existing Gears 5 campaign. The actor will portray Marcus Fenix should players choose to utilize him, and Batista has re-recorded all of Marcus’ lines throughout the story. Unlike the addition of Batista to the multiplayer, this will be included in the game’s Xbox Series X optimization update and available to all players. This should include Xbox One players, meaning that even those who aren’t upgrading right away can unleash The Animal on The Swarm.

In addition to Batista’s appearance in the campaign, Gears 5’s Xbox Series X version will give players a serious upgrade in terms of raw power. Loading times will be cut down drastically from the existing Xbox One version of the game, multiplayer gameplay will support up to 120 frames per second, and there are also improvements to shadows and a boosted resolution. The game is reportedly running better than it did on even the highest-end PCs at launch, which is a testament to Microsoft’s hardware going into the next generation.

While this isn’t exactly giving Batista what he wants, his inclusion in the Gears 5 campaign is a fun addition for fans of his looking for a unique way to play through the game again on new hardware. It’s also a novel inclusion that players don’t see much in games, especially those with heavy story components. One of the only other comparable additions is when Gearbox added Duke Nukem to a re-release of Bulletstorm. The other characters in the campaign didn’t get new voice lines, so Duke had to constantly correct them for what may generously be considered comedic effect. With known actor Dave Bautista playing Marcus Fenix in this campaign, The Coalition sidesteps those issues and presents a model that could see other Hollywood stars crash existing games in the future.
