Genshin Impact: How to Fish in Update 2.1

There is a new fishing game in Genshin Impact’s new update 2.1, and it’s very different from the way that fishing has been in the game so far.

Genshin Impact’s update 2.1 is here, and with it a large influx of new content. Not only do players have two new characters in the current banner, but also new islands and quests have been added as well. A part of this new content in Genshin Impact is an updated fishing mini-game that is much more complicated than just catching fish by hand.

How to Start Fishing in Genshin Impact

In order to fish in Genshin Impact, players will need to download the update for 2.1. After that, Katherine at the Adventurer’s Guild in Mondstadt will want to speak with the Traveler about a brand new commission. She’ll ask players to travel to right outside of the city where a fisherman awaits. The fisherman, named Nantuck, will ask players to join him at Cider Lake just south of the city.

Players will then get the Mondstadt fishing rod called the Windtangler and some bait, and the game will run through a quick tutorial of fishing that is a little unclear. Here’s a breakdown of how to equip the fishing rod and catch some new fishy friends.

Fishing Mini-Game in Genshin Impact

Fishing spots now will appear all over the map of Teyvat, and players will actually be able to look and see what kind of fish are in that location. When a fishing spot is located, walking up to the location will give players a prompt to hit the interact button to start fishing. Players must walk lightly up to the fishing location; using any attacks or fast movements might scare all the fish away. Fish will eventually respawn, but they won’t be there immediately for players to catch.

Once players press the interact button, they will need to choose the location to cast their line. Aim for the actual fish that the Traveler of Genshin Impact wants to catch, then release the casting button. Once the line is cast, a bar will appear at the top of the screen. Pressing the cast button and holding it will fill the meter up while releasing it will drain it.

Keep the bar inside of the fish’s box on the meter in order to catch it. If the meter is green, the tension is fine. If the meter turns red, the tension is too high and the fish might escape. When the meter turns orange, this means the fish is pulling hard on the line and players will have to be ready for the fish’s box to move very quickly. Once the small circle with a fishing hook is completely filled in, the fish it caught.

Fishing Controls for PS4 and PS5

• Walk up to a fishing spot and hit Square when prompted to fish.
• Players can then use X to select the fishing rod they wish to use and Triangle to select the bait
• To cast the line, press and hold R2, moving the target to where the fish are.
• Once a fish has taken the bait, players need to hit R2 again.
• Holding R2 will fill up the tension meter. Releasing it will loosen the tension meter. Keep the tension meter equal to the moving box.
• Players can then hit X to exit the fishing mini-game or continue to fish by hitting R2 to cast again.

Fishing Controls for PC

• Press F to start the Genshin Impact update 2.1 fishing mini-game at a fishing spot.
• Click the left mouse button on the rod and bait of choice.
• Click the left mouse button on the start button.
• Click and hold the left mouse button to choose where to throw the line while moving the mouse to select the location.
• Release to throm.
• Click the LMB to try to catch the fish, holding the LMB and releasing it to control the tension meter.

Tips and Tricks for Fishing in Teyvat

• There are two other fishing rods available in the game, one for Liyue called the Wishmaker and one for Inazuma called the Narukawa Ukai.
• Each rod is more efficient at catching the fish exclusive to their areas.
• Some fish will be attracted to different bait, so learning bait recipes will be necessary for catching all the different types of fish.
• There is a new claymore called the Luxurious Sea-Lord that was revealed a couple days before update 2.1 dropped that will be available through the fishing mini-game only.
• There is a whole new page of achievements for fishing that players can complete for Primogems.
• There will be a fish tank for displaying fish available for the Serenitea Pot.

Genshin Impact is available for mobile, PC, PS4, and PS5.
