In 2009, Law Abiding Citizen starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx received a Saturn Award nomination for Best Action/Adventure/Thriller Film. Never has there been a more deserving movie to win this award. Sadly, it lost to Inglourious Basterds.

Law Abiding Citizen was packed with thrills and twists that can only be compared to TV shows like 24. In the movie, Butler plays. Clyde Alexander Shelton. He is a convicted criminal who despite being locked up, still manages to terrorize and murder those in the outside world that he feels were indirectly responsible for his wife and child’s death. Jamie Foxx plays the assistant District Attorney Nick Rice.

9 Forgettable: Set In Gods Of Egypt

In Gods Of Egypt, Butler is Set the “God Of Darkness.” Set has taken over as ruler of the North-African nation of Egypt and pulled the once peaceful territory into a state of violence and instability. A hero emerges in the name of Bek (Brenton Thwaites) He teams up with the god Horus (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau)to fight Set and save his lover as well as the nation.

The film received all kinds of terrible reviews and backlash. There was also plenty of outrage when the Egyptian deities who are historically black were portrayed by white actors. Both Lionsgate and director Alex Proyas ended up apologizing for this.

When most members of the president’s security detail are taken out, Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Butler) is forced to be a one-man army and save the day.

The action sequences of the film were wildly praised and so was Antoine Fuqua’s direction. Butler also gave a standout performance, earning comparisons with popular action stars of the 80s and 90s like Arnold Schwarzenneger and Sylvester Stallone.

5 Forgettable: Milo Boyd In The Bounty Hunter

You can’t help but get the feeling that this movie could have been received better if it was a proper action film. However, it was more a comedy and it totally exposed Gerard Butler’s inability to be funny. Even Jennifer Aniston couldn’t cover up for him.

The movie follows bounty hunter Milo Boyd (Gerard Butler) who decides to track down his ex-wife, Nicole (Jennifer Aniston) for skipping bail. However, the job doesn’t end up being as easy as he expected. Nicole gives him a hard time because she knows him all too well.

Butler starred as George Dryer, a former soccer star (Butler) who returns to his home town to get a new life and fix his strained relationship with his son. He thus decides to coach his son’s soccer team. However, his new job doesn’t give him peace, especially when the moms who have their sons on the team decide he’s a perfect catch.

2 Impressive: Stoic In How To Train Your Dragon 2

It’s no surprise that this is Butler’s best-reviewed film. It has a score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. In the animated film, Butler voices a character named Stoic. The elderly Stoic is the chieftain of the Viking tribe of Berk and the father of the main character Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III.

How To Train Your Dragon 2 grossed $618.9 million globally, becoming Butler’s best-performing movie. The movie was also praised for being appealing to both adults and children. it also received an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature.

1 Forgettable: Jacob “Jake” Lawson In Geostorm

For directors, disaster films aren’t that easy to make but for actors, it should be straightforward, right? Not really. Here, Butler proved just how hard it is to save the world and look cool while doing it. Throughout the film, you can’t help but hope he just grabs a gun and “gets the hell out here” to go find some bad guys. Storms are too tough.

In Geostorm, Butler is Jacob “Jake” Lawson, a satellite designer (Gerard Butler)who finds himself in a race against time to prevent a catastrophe when earth’s climate control satellites stop working. The movie goes hard with the tension and it is often promising but it never quite reaches the heights of other disaster movies.
