Get Out’s 2 Alternate Endings Both Saw Chris Lose

Get Out sees Chris walk away from his nightmarish experiences, but Jordan Peele’s alternate endings almost saw things end badly for him.

Both of Get Out’s alternate endings saw Chris lose. Jordan Peele first rose to fame with sketch series Key & Peele, where he and Keegan-Michael Key got to show off both their comic chops and talent for playing a broad range of characters. The show came to an end in 2015 and while Peele went on to play supporting roles on other comedy shows, it was 2017’s Get Out that altered the course of his career. Peele is a lifelong horror fan and paired with Blumhouse to make his directorial debut with Get Out, which follows Chris, a young black man meeting the rich family of his white girlfriend; during the visit, he uncovers their horrifying secret.

Get Out cast Daniel Kaluuya as Chris with Alison Williams playing his girlfriend Rose Armitage. Not only was the movie a big success, but it also received praise for Peele’s direction, its performances, the many layers of the screenplay and tackling subjects like racism and white privilege head on. The movie’s success saw Peele become something of an instant horror auteur too, and he followed up with doppelganger horror Us in 2019. Peele is also the producer on many genre shows and movies, including Nia DaCosta’s upcoming Candyman legacy sequel.

Get Out’s Chris suffers through any number of traumas and attempted brain transplants throughout the film, and the movie puts viewers through the wringer one last time in the final scene. This sees Chris attempting to strangle Rose, who is part of her family’s twisted scheme to lure black people to the house so rich, white elites can have their brains transplanted into their bodies. At this point, Chris has killed the rest of the clan and is about to strangle the very evil Rose – only for police lights to flash on him. Rather than cops pointing guns at Chris, however, it’s revealed to be his friend Rod and they drive off together and leave Rose to die alone.

Most fans will probably know by now this wasn’t the original ending for Get Out. Instead, it really was two cops who happened upon a blood-soaked Chris trying to strange a wounded Rose, and the final scene saw Rod visit Chris in prison. With overwhelming evidence he murdered a rich white family and the fact he can’t remember key details – likely due to Missy’s hypnosis – Chris seems resigned to his fate in prison. He tells Rod to give up on trying to help him, but Chris himself can live with the fact he at least stopped the Armitage’s operation and faced his fears.

This Get Out ending was intended to be bleak and a statement on the fact that in reality, this would almost certainly be Chris’ fate. Peele and the movie’s producers decided to change the ending, partly because test audiences loved the character so much and wanted him to win, and the filmmakers felt that was a more powerful note to end on. Jordan Peele also wrote another ending that would have hammered home the homage to 1970s social thrillers like The Stepford Wives even further.

This ending would have jumped ahead a couple of months on from Get Out’s finale, and found Rod sneaking into a gated community looking for Chris. He eventually spots him staring at his own reflection in a window, but when Rod approaches and shouts out Chris’ name, the latter turns and states “I assure you, I don’t know who you’re talking about.” This meant that much like Andre (Lakeith Stanfield), Chris was recaptured and underwent the transplant procedure. Chris is now trapped in “The Sunken Place” while his body is being driven by a rich white person. While this would have been a chilling conclusion in its own right, it ultimately wasn’t shot.
