Ghidorah Started Godzilla & Kongs Original Titan War Theory Explained

Ghidorah could have been the real instigator behind the ancient Titan War described in Godzilla vs. Kong. Not unlike Godzilla’s battle with Ghidorah in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the conflict in the latest MonsterVerse movie has a backstory that goes back thousands of years. The history they share was first teased in a post-credits scene in Kong: Skull Island.

Cave paintings hinted at the idea that Godzilla once fought with one of Kong’s ancestors. This possibility was elaborated on by Godzilla vs. Kong’s Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall), who talked about Iwi myths of a Titan War between the two monsters. This history served as a setup for their rivalry in the movie, which erupted into an epic grudge match in the ocean, before being continued in a neon-lighted Hong Kong in the film’s third act. Whether or not there was a clear winner during the original Titan War is still a mystery, but there’s no confusion over who emerged victorious during the rematch – Godzilla.

With both monsters being strong enough to lay claim to the title of alpha, it’s not hard to figure out why these two would come to blows in any period of Earth’s history. With that in mind, their first clash easily could have happened for the same reasons, with one species – presumably Godzilla’s – looking to assert its dominance over the other. However, an entirely different scenario regarding the circumstances that led to the war has since been raised. Here’s why it’s been suggested that Ghidorah is the one who really started the ancient Titan War.

Godzilla & Kong’s Ancient MonsterVerse History Explained

The Iwi paintings and the ax made from Godzilla’s dorsal fins confirm that when Godzilla and Kong’s ancestors fought for the first time, it was in the Hollow Earth world. And artwork in the opening credits points toward additional MonsterVerse Titans – Mothra and the Skullcrawlers – taking sides as well. At least one of the battles during the war seemingly happened in Kong’s temple. Aside from that, the film doesn’t go into much detail about their war or why Godzilla and Kong are “the last ones standing”. That being said, the Godzilla vs. Kong novelization goes a long way in filling in the banks. Through Jia and her memories of her people’s stories about Kong, the book explains quite a lot about the past.

According to Jia, her ancestors dwelled in the Hollow Earth with Kong’s kind, thousands of years before they relocated to Skull Island. At an unspecified time, they had an encounter with Zo-zla-halawa, which is what Jia calls Godzilla throughout the book. What Jia remembers from the Iwi tribe’s stories is that Zo-zla-halawa shared the Hollow Earth with Kong and their people until “he ate a star” and turned evil. When this happened, Kong’s ancestors decided to forge “bonds of friendship” and team up against Zo-zla-hawala, with the intention of driving him out of the Hollow Earth for good. Jia doesn’t know what the exact outcome was, but it’s said in the book that the Kong and the Iwi ended up making a long trek from their Hollow Earth to Skull Island. Their decision to abandon their home doesn’t outright confirm Godzilla’s victory, but it does imply that the King of the Monsters chased them out.

Ghidorah Has A Hollow Earth Connection

As noted above, the Titan War appeared to encompass the Skullcrawlers, Godzilla, Kong, and possibly Mothra. Those are the monsters that have been officially teased, but there is room for a fifth player to have had a role in the conflict. A conversation between Monarch scientists in the Godzilla vs. Kong novelization revealed a potential connection between the Hollow Earth and Ghidorah. As some may have noticed, Antarctica is a setting used in two different MonsterVerse movies. On the surface, it seems like it’s just a coincidence that it was the location of Ghidorah’s frozen body and an entrance to the Hollow Earth, but the book indicates otherwise. As pointed out by Mark Russell, it’s weird that Ghidorah was found so close to the Hollow Earth entry point, which is why he believes that Ghidorah may have been trying to enter or exit the Hollow Earth when he was attacked by Godzilla.

Ghidorah Could Have Been Kong’s Original Enemy

A fan theory postulates that the Iwi legend about Zo-zla-halawa may secretly be about Ghidorah, who could have attacked the Hollow Earth and earned the wrath of Kong’s species [via Reddit]. Somehow, a mistake could have been made on the part of the monsters, which inevitably led to Kong’s ancestors falsely blaming Godzilla for Ghidorah’s actions. When taking a few things into consideration, this theory does sound plausible within the context of the Monsterverse. First of all, Jia noted that Zo-zla-halawa turned evil, which doesn’t fit with who Godzilla is in the MonsterVerse. He’s always been a protector figure who defends the planet from threats.

Furthermore, the line about Godzilla eating a star could be interpreted as the origin story for how Godzilla originally acquired his atomic breath, but it may actually mean something else entirely. Instead, it’s possible that Ghidorah entered the Hollow Earth, and absorbed some of its secret power. That would explain why he was there. After leaving, he could have been defeated by Godzilla, who was then attacked by Kong’s species. In other words, Kong’s ancestors could have retaliated against Godzilla for havoc that Ghidorah directly caused.

If this is true, it would have interesting implications for Ghidorah’s role in the MonsterVerse and its history. Godzilla vs. Kong already demonstrated that Ghidorah is Godzilla’s greatest enemy with its Mechagodzilla twist, but his importance may go deeper than that. In a sense, Ghidorah was the “final boss” for both King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. That’s because Mechagodzilla was being controlled by Ghidorah’s spirit when he was fighting Godzilla and Kong. Ghidorah died to Godzilla previously, but the Hollow Earth source combined with his DNA reactivated his consciousness in Mechagodzilla and provided him with an opportunity to get his revenge. As Mechagodzilla, Ghidorah ultimately forced a team-up between the two warring alphas. So if Ghidorah really is the evil Zo-zla-halawa, that would mean that the monster who brought them together in Godzilla vs. Kong is the very creature who ignited the war between their ancestors in the first place all those years ago.
