Ghost of Tsushima Why The Mongols Invade (& What Their Plan Is)

Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima explores the first Mongol invasion of Japan, specifically on the island of Tsushima. But the game doesn’t make it explicitly clear why the Mongols are invading in the first place. Players may be surprised to know the game is based on real historical events, and that Mongol invasions were far from uncommon during this time.

The Mongols, known for their expansive empire stretching from Germany to Korea, often utilized invasions in order to conquer more land for Emperor Kublai Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan. Ghost of Tsushima’s story follows the first Mongol invasion of Japan, and even though the story of samurai Jin Sakai is fictional, the invasion actually took place in the thirteenth century. This event marked the beginning of the Mongol crusade against Japan. As is explored in the game, it’s also the point in time in which the Japanese samurai began to adopt more advanced skills and weaponry to compete with their new enemies.

While Jin Sakai successfully leads the Tsushima people to push back against the invading Mongol empire in the game, the events took place slightly differently in real life. The real invasion of Tsushima island occurred in 1274 and was spearheaded by Kublai Khan, who ruled the Mongols from 1260 to 1294. The Mongols, unfortunately, slaughtered all of Tsushima and defeated So Sukekuni’s forces – Sukekuni was likely the inspiration for Ghost of Tsushima’s Lord Shimura, Den of Geek notes. There was little pushback from the local people on Tsushima since the invasion was so ruthless, allowing the Mongols to later invade similar, nearby islands.

How Historically Accurate Is Ghost of Tsushima?

Even though Ghost of Tsushima is based on real events, much of the main plot line is made up for the sake of the game. The title is also heavily based on classic Kurosawa samurai movies. “This is a game that is entirely grounded in reality,” Nate Fox, creative director at Sucker Punch, previously told Game Informer. “We’re trying hard to transport people to 1274 Japan. We’re inspired by history, but we’re not building it back stone by stone. We’re not trying to rebuild Tsushima island. Our protagonist is a work of fiction.”

Interestingly, Fox admitted the studio was initially interested in using actual historical figures in the game. They ended up deciding against it when they were cautioned that it could be in bad taste. “We actually thought about using some historical figures, and we asked some people who are more culturally aware than us and they said that it would be insensitive, so we didn’t do it,” he added.

Ghost of Tsushima only explores events that happened with the Mongols’ first invasion on Japan, but it opens up the possibility for a sequel to explore the second invasion, which began in 1281, and with the positive critical reception the game has received, a sequel could definitely be in the works.
