Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier easily earned a spot on Game Rant’s list of 2012’s Most Anticipated Games. Unfortunately, we’ll be anticipating this one a bit longer than originally expected. Publisher Ubisoft announced today that Future Soldier has been delayed from its early March release date. North American players can now expect the game to arrive May 22nd, 2012, while European gamers will have to hold out until May 24, 2012.

Taking some of the sting out of the delay is news that a multiplayer beta will kick off in April, and that the game — which Ubisoft had previously insisted would not be ported to PC — will be ported to PC, though it will not arrive alongside the console releases.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier was officially announced way back in February of 2010. Since that time, the game has gone through a number of delays and changes, including the addition of motion controls. Future Soldier is essentially a reboot for the franchise, which will have to fight for attention against such powerhouse shooters as Modern Warfare 3 and Battlefield 3.

In a press release, Adrian Lacey, IP development director at Ubisoft Studios France, discusses the reasons for Future Soldier’s delay.

“Ubisoft prides itself on creating some of the most compelling and innovative experiences in digital entertainment. Today we are feature complete in our multi-player, single-player and four-player co-op campaign modes. We have made the decision to move the date in order to ensure that all these ingredients are pushed to the highest level and provide a truly unique shooter experience. The Ghost Recon franchise is known for setting the standard of high definition gaming and we believe the extra couple of months will allow us to reach that goal. We would like to thank all Ghost Recon fans for their patience and look forward to unveiling some exciting new elements in the coming weeks.”

Beyond announcing that it will begin in March, very little has been revealed about the forthcoming multiplayer beta. It will be restricted to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 (sorry, PC players), and beta access is one of the perks of pre-ordering the game at GameStop — though, strangely, only for Xbox 360 owners. Perhaps the beta on PS3 will be exclusive to PlayStation Plus subscribers. In any case, pre-ordering Ghost Recon: Future Soldier at GameStop upgrades the whole package to Signature Edition status, which naturally comes with a number of bonuses:

Best of all, the Future Soldier Signature Edition is the exact same price as the standard version of the game.
