Ghostbusters 3 Replacing The Team Is No Issue (Thanks To Stranger Things)

Ghostbusters: Afterlife features a new, younger team replacing the beloved crew of the 1980s Ghostbusters films, but hopefully the recast won’t cause an issue because Stranger Things perfected that formula. Releasing in June 2021, Ghostbusters 3 seems to ignore the 2016 reboot and acts as a direct sequel to its original predecessors. 2019’s teaser trailer appears to have drawn inspiration from the success of Stranger Things, as it focuses on children uncovering the mysteries of their grandfather’s farm and the strange seismic activity in their town.

Unlike 2016’s Ghostbusters, which drew undeserved ire after its all-female recasting, Ghostbusters: Afterlife has a better chance of satisfying more viewers because it follows the success of Netflix’s Stranger Things. Stranger Things is, of course, an homage to ’80s cinema and culture, but it distinguishes itself by blending nostalgia with a compelling storyline and crafting something new and interesting. It also boasts well-developed and relatable characters whom viewers have grown attached to and watched grow up.

Ghostbusters: Afterlife can definitely follow this formula by marrying the old with the new or introducing new people and implementing strains of what made the originals so popular. By making the characters children or young adults, the third movie allows for a fresh outlook on what made the first Ghostbusters films so memorable. The fact that Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard was cast as one of the leads is intrinsic to what the filmmakers want to accomplish with Ghostbusters: Afterlife. In Stranger Things season 2, Mike, Will, Lucas, and Dustin dress up as the Ghostbusters for Halloween. Apart from the casting choices of the 2016 reboot, fans were most disappointed that the film didn’t feel like an extension of the source material, despite it having nearly the same plot. The cameos made by Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, and Sigourney Weaver, among others, were meaningless and did not make enough of an impact because they played new characters. Alternatively, Ghostbusters: Afterlife will have most of the original cast make appearances as their established characters.

The Ghostbusters: Afterlife trailer goes so far as to match the tone and feel of a Stranger Things episode or ’80s movie. The small, isolated town of Summerville, Illinois resembles Hawkins, Indiana. The budding friendships, sporadic earthquakes, the mist surrounding the barn, and the green light pulsating from the bottom of a well all parallel imagery from the show and heighten the tension and deepen the enigma. Children battling a force greater than themselves also aligns with ’80s movie tropes. Hopefully, Ghostbusters 3 can capture the spirit of those movies without appearing too heavy-handed.

Jason Reitman, who is the director of Ghostbusters: Afterlife and whose father Ivan Reitman directed the original Ghostbusters, has the tough job of finding a healthy balance between preserving the “sanctity” of the original movies and ushering in the new generation. The decision to make the new ghost-busting team younger seems the least offensive to fans, as it offers an innocent approach to mature and sometimes frightening content. Luckily, Stranger Things has already refined that balance, so Ghostbusters: Afterlife’s story and characters should have no problem following in its footsteps.
