Ghostbusters Afterlife 2 Could See the Return of Vigo the Carpathian

A sequel to Ghostbusters: Afterlife could see the return of Vigo the Carpathian from 1989’s Ghostbusters II. Writer/director Jason Reitman’s Afterlife is currently playing in theaters, and the film both pays homage to his father director Ivan Reitman’s original Ghostbusters movies and introduces the franchise to a new generation. Afterlife stars Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, McKenna Grace, Bokeem Woodbine, and Tracy Letts and features cameos from the original Ghostbusters including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Annie Potts.

More so than Ghostbusters II, Afterlife leans into its relationship with the 1984 film. The latest entry follows Callie (Carrie Coon), the daughter of Egon Spengler (the late Harold Ramis), and her kids, Phoebe (McKenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfard), who move to their late grandfather’s farmhouse in Summerville, Oklahoma. Phoebe and Trevor discover Egon’s Ghostbusters equipment and subsequently embrace the line of work when odds things start occurring in Summerville. Turns out, Egon moved to Summerville to thwart the original film’s villain, Gozer the Gozerian, which leads to the return of other familiar threats like a slew of Mini Stay Pufts. While paying tribute to Ramis and his legacy as a Ghostbuster, Afterlife paves the way for future installments.

Reitman recently appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast and teased the pending sequel to Afterlife. In particular, the writer/director said that it could feature an appearance by Ghostbusters II’s villain, Vigo The Carpathian, who was played by the late Wilhelm von Homburg. “There is a lot of time and opportunity for Vigo The Carpathian to make his return. Look, are you saying that’s the only painting of Vigo The Carpathian? Maybe, he’s riding a horse in another one, maybe, impaling someone in another one.”

Ghostbusters II made $215 million during its run in theaters. However, it failed to live up to the original and was deemed a commercial and a critical failure. Still, it has some great performances, action sequences, and comedy. Not unlike Afterlife, Ghostbusters II begins with its eponymous gang being largely forgotten, appearing at kids’ birthday parties rather than being celebrated for saving the city five years earlier. When a 16th-century magician called Vigo the Carpathian attempts to regain power in the real world through a portrait at the museum where Sigourney Weaver’s Dana Barrett works, the crew returns to busting.

While Afterlife is obsessed with the first film in the franchise, the film also features minor references to Ghostbusters II, including Ray’s Occult bookstore. Many believed the threequel retconned the second film due to Egon’s decision to repaint the Ghostbusters II logo, but Reitman has said that this could be addressed in a sequel to Afterlife. Aside from that, Reitman remains tight-lipped about Ghostbusters II connections as he’s awaiting the green light for Afterlife 2. If Vigo does appear in the sequel, they’ll likely have to recast the role as they did with Gozer or digitally recreate the original actor. Regardless, it’ll be interesting to see what the future has in store for the old Ghostbusters and the new.
