Ghostbusters Muncher Reveal Hints Afterlife May Repeat The Reboots Issues

Scheduled for release in the summer of 2021, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, which features new cast members and all-new ghosts like “Muncher,” is already showing hints that it might repeat several of the 2016 reboot’s mistakes. Ideally, Afterlife is positioned to serve as both a legitimate successor to Ghostbusters 1 and 2, and an opportunity to redeem what some fans found to be a rather dull and uninspired effort in the 2016 Ghostbusters reboot starring Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon, and Kristen Wiig.

While the 2016 reboot’s directorial duties went to Freaks and Geeks producer Paul Feig, Afterlife is directed by Jason Reitman, son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the original 1984 Ghostbusters. Reportedly, Afterlife includes iconic cast members from the original Ghostbusters, including Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Sigourney Weaver, along with new talents like Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd. The film’s new director and its mix of new and established cast members indicate a somewhat mixed desire to both honor the existing Ghostbusters legacy and blaze new narrative trails. That said, the recently leaked Muncher character might indicate that like the 2016 reboot, Afterlife leans too heavily on cheap fan service and nostalgia.

Muncher’s reveal comes from a recent episode of MasterChef Junior: Spain. During a recent Ghostbusters-themed episode, aspiring child chefs completed a challenge involving a pool of blue slime and a large blue sculpted version of Muncher, complete with six limbs. With its rotund face and extra appendages, Muncher looks like a cross between a latter-day Marlon Brando and one of those microscopic, impossible-to-destroy tardigrade creatures. Extra limbs notwithstanding, it seems pretty clear that this new ghost is highly derivative of Slimer, the iconic, plus-sized ghost from the original Ghostbusters. Further, the name “Muncher” suggests that this character will be defined largely by its capacity to eat – a joke that has already been exhausted via Slimer.

Although the 2016 Ghostbusters makes many attempts to honor the original, many fans find that the film does so in a clumsy, insincere manner. Take, for instance, Dan Aykroyd’s cameo, in which the script finds cheap pretense for him to utter the line, “I ain’t afraid of no ghosts” — a nod to the original movie’s theme song. Such clumsy references end up feeling like bland, boilerplate fan service. In a similar capacity, Muncher’s derivative design reveals that Jason Reitman’s new take may pose the risk of simply re-skinning iconic elements from the original in much the same manner as the reboot. Afterlife is better off worrying less about celebrating the original and worrying more about producing a truly unique and inspired cinematic experience.

Fans will have to wait until June to see if Afterlife succeeds in breathing new life into the Ghostbusters franchise. Viewers may come to find that Muncher truly is a well-inspired character who shares very little in common with Slimer. That said, these early leaks hint that Afterlife might opt for very brightly-colored, buffoonish ghosts, much like those that viewers complained about in the reboot. It’s good to remember that the original featured some downright scary spirits, including the librarian ghost played by Alice Drummond. Here’s to hoping that claims of genuine scares in Afterlife are legitimate. With any luck, Jason Reitman understands that a balance between levity, thrills, nostalgia, and originality must be struck in order for Ghostbusters: Afterlife to succeed.
