Despite the love Larry Hama usually garners from fans, there are some who feel he has been too overrated by the community. In fact, while Hama’s return to G.I. Joe with IDW was largely celebrated by the fan base, some believe he failed to bring enough of his original vision to the table.
One Reddit user has gone as far as to say that fans should check out what IDW has created but completely ignore the Larry Hama material. It’s an interesting and perhaps controversial take, but one that does shine the light on other talented writers and artists who worked with the brand.
7 The Hasbroverse
Comic-book crossovers are a huge part of the industry, and fans will be familiar with the idea of Batman facing off against the Predator, or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles coming across the Power Rangers. It therefore wasn’t too shocking for the Hasbroverse to be unleashed with IDW’s Transformers vs. G.I. Joe line, the kind of storyline the indie comic book company could find cinematic success with.
The comics were largely well-received at the time, and fans had fun with the idea. IGN even gave a very positive review of the start of its run. Yet one Reddit user suggests that IDW completely ruined the franchise with this Hasbroverse nonsense, with writer Aubrey Sitterson drawing the brunt of the criticism.
6 The Politics Of G.I. Joe
G.I. Joe’s history is heavily linked to the politics of war. Indeed, the toys themselves were hugely affected in sales by moments in history like the Vietnam war, resulting in the line taking a science-fiction approach to its material. But the All-American hero is always destined to resonate with patriotism, the military, and difficult political issues.
No matter what era, therefore, the comics have had to play into politics in one way, shape, or form. It’s therefore a surprising opinion from one Reddit user that they don’t wish any of the comics to get too political when asking whether to check out the latest runs. There is arguably an interesting visual design style that evolved in G.I. Joe here though, suggesting the opinion that it was missing something could be unpopular.

G.I. Joe purists will suggest that the best way into the land of the brand’s comics is through the original Marvel run. It’s still available to buy and is of course enjoyed at its best when it’s published as Marvel had originally intended. They are not always easy to come across though.

They suggest that the best way into the series is through the IDW curated collections. It’s a fair point and perfect for newer fans who might have wanted a better understanding of what the G.I. Joe films did right and wrong when looking at the source material, but may tread on the worth of the originals.
3 The Lens Of Nostalgia
It’s fair to say that nostalgia is a powerful thing. Plenty of fans look back on the Marvel run of the comics with that very lens, seeing it as they did when they were children. However, there’s evidence to suggest that, throughout Marvel’s ownership, there were some lower moments for the series.
A Reddit user actually re-read the initial story arcs and perhaps controversially noted that plenty of the narratives actually lost their threads or were dropped altogether. Interestingly, despite it perhaps being unpopular today, fans were voicing the same opinions in the letters section at the time.
2 Marvel’s Conclusion
In debates about the Marvel run, there’s certainly an unpopular opinion as to how the series wrapped up. Although removing the nostalgia lens might allow fans to suggest that there were faults with the Marvel series, most still protect how Marvel finished it all up, especially since it’s a difficult task.
However, one member of the Reddit audience couldn’t even make it to the end, suggesting that the series just got too weird and grew unreadable. They likely wouldn’t want to see any of these iterations of the G.I. Joe characters adapted to cinema in future projects.
