Here’s Brendan Fraser’s brief cameo as Sgt. Stone in G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra explained. Director Stephen Sommers had movies like cult gem Deep Rising under his belt before scoring his first major hit with 1999’s The Mummy. This remake was a project Universal had spent years developing, with filmmakers like Clive Barker, Mick Garris, and George A. Romero all taking a crack at it. It was only when Sommers came in and pitched a very Indiana Jones inspired version that it moved forward. The Mummy was an instant success and sequel The Mummy Returns was rushed into production for a 2001 release.

Since The Mummy franchise became a license to print money, Sommers was given free rein on Van Helsing, a 2004 blockbuster starring Hugh Jackman as the title hunter. The movie united Dracula, Frankenstein’s Monster and The Wolfman, but its overabundance of CGI and terrible script saw it perform below expectations and fail to launch a new franchise. The director would return with 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra, starring Channing Tatum and Sienna Miller. While the movie was a decent hit it received lukewarm reviews, so 2013 sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation acted as a soft reboot and only brought back a handful of characters from Sommer’s movie.

G.I. Joe: The Rise Of Cobra featured a wide cast of characters from the toy and cartoon series, including Duke, Snake Eyes, Cobra Commander and Heavy Duty. The Mummy star Brendan Fraser also pops up in a surprise cameo as Sergeant Stone, a drill instructor who helps Heavy Duty train Duke and Ripcord. It’s a tiny part ultimately since he only observes Duke getting beaten up by Snake Eyes during training, before Tatum’s soldier finally knocks him down – which is apparently something that’s never happened. Stone then proclaims Duke a “Joe.”

Before G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra’s release, Brendan Fraser was reported to be playing Gung Ho. The actor would later reveal in an MTV interview he couldn’t play that character because Paramount didn’t have the rights, and he didn’t even know his character’s name until he saw the end credits. Stone is the name of two distinct characters in the franchise, though both were Lieuntants and not a Sergeant like Fraser’s version.

The G.I. Joe Extreme cartoon and toyline had Lt. Stone as a field commander who oversaw the Joe missions, while the rebooted G.I. Joe Sigma 6 series reinvented Lt. Stone as an eyepatch-wearing British spy with a bionic arm. Sgt. Stone was essentially created for G.I. Joe: Rise Of Cobra just to give Brendan Fraser a cameo, though his take on Stone did receive a tie-in toy.
