Gilmore Girls 10 Episodes Everyone Loves But Havent Aged Well

From grabbing a coffee at Luke’s to joking about pop culture, there are many things about Rory and Lorelai’s connection on Gilmore Girls that fans gravitate to. Their relationship is so charming and loveable that even the most lackluster episodes are still entertaining. Living in Stars Hollow always seems like an enjoyable experience, and there are many aspects of this show that will always be relatable. The mother/daughter duo date, argue with friends, and strive to make their dreams come true.

Despite the ways that the TV drama still feels relevant now, there are many episodes of Gilmore Girls that don’t hold up today, even though fans love them and would re-watch them any chance they get.

10 The Lorelais’ First Day At Chilton

Gilmore Girls 10 Episodes Everyone Loves But Havent Aged Well

Just like parts of the Gilmore Girls pilot haven’t aged well, this season one episode has some problems.

“The Lorelais’ First Day At Chilton” is an iconic episode and one that fans always reference, as Lorelai screws up by not picking up her dry cleaning before going with Rory to her first day at her new prestigious school. Headmaster Charleston asks Lorelai to remove the coat that is covering up her jean shorts and t-shirt, which is an attempt to be polite, but ends up with Lorelai having her clothing shamed by the Headmaster and her mother. These days, of course, people recognize the issues with both shaming someone for their clothing, and for shaming mothers for not being ‘perfect’ enough to do the school run in a carefully created outfit.

9 A House Is Not a Home

Most fans would agree that the earlier seasons of Gilmore Girls are better, but the season five finale sets up a compelling and entertaining season six, even if it’s tough to see Rory and Lorelai not talking.

In this episode, Rory steals a yacht, which would still be bad today, but she also tells her mom that she wants to take time off from college and Lorelai freaks out. This episode doesn’t age well because in 2020, it’s totally acceptable to want to take a break from school. Gap years and other breaks have become more of a normal thing to do, and it makes sense that Rory, who has always been a good student, would need a second. She wouldn’t be judged for it so harshly now.

8 Application Anxiety

This season three episode is all about Emily (Kelly Bishop), Lorelai, and Rory worrying about Rory getting into Harvard. While it’s a beloved episode, since Lorelai and Rory have dinner at an alumni’s house and their family is pretty crazy, it doesn’t exactly hold up.

The Springsteen family shames their daughter for being the only one who didn’t go to Harvard, but the bigger issue with this episode is that Emily, Lorelai, and Rory had always thought it would be a complete breeze for Rory to be accepted to Harvard. Since this is widely considered the most difficult school to receive an acceptance letter for, it seems that the family would think differently about this now.

7 The Lorelais’ First Day at Yale

Rory and Lorelai are always compared to each other as they get along famously and have so much in common.

But when Rory is terrified of staying at Yale for her first night and Lorelai stays with her, it’s definitely odd. Doesn’t Rory want to be independent, and doesn’t Lorelai think that she should be? At the time, this storyline was fine because fans know that the mother/daughter duo are close. But if this episode aired now, it would be lame and embarrassing – not to mention problematic, as other students’ parents may have something to say about a strange adult having a sleepover with them.

6 Keg! Max!

Milo Ventimiglia’s Gilmore Girls character Jess Mariano is beloved, but his behavior in this third season episode is super problematic.

Fans loved watching Lane’s band play at a party, as this was an exciting moment for her, but it wasn’t fun to watch Jess try to get Rory to have sex with him at that party. Jess doesn’t seem to want to take “no” for an answer but finally stops. This episode didn’t age well as this is pressuring her to give consent that approaches sexual assault. While it made some sense at the time, as Rory knew that she was less experienced than Jess and she saw it through that lens, it’s a hard scene to forget now.

5 A Deep-Fried Korean Thanksgiving

In this third season episode, Lorelai and Rory go to four (yes, four) Thanksgiving celebrations, which is a lot of turkey. This is a funny concept and one that is very memorable.

Lane Kim gets less interesting over seven seasons and this episode doesn’t give her family the treatment they deserve. When the Gilmore Girls attend her Thanksgiving dinner, the show acts like it’s really foreign. The series plays up how weird Lane’s mom is by having Dave (Adam Brody) play hymns and it’s hard not to think this would be viewed as a bit racist and offensive today. Everyone should respect Mrs. Kim and her beliefs.

4 Rory’s Dance

Gilmore Girls 10 Episodes Everyone Loves But Havent Aged Well

Dean isn’t actually a perfect boyfriend but Jared Padalecki’s character seems sweet when he goes with Rory to her school dance in this season one episode.

While this is a fan favorite episode since it’s classic, the storyline is odd: Rory and Dean fall asleep and everyone gets angry at them. Lorelai thinks that Rory is sleeping with Dean and yells about getting a prescription for the birth control pill. Rory and Dean hadn’t been intimate yet, but even if they had been, would that be such a big deal? This storyline made sense when the episode aired as Lorelai was concerned since she was a teen mom. But in 2020, teens have a little more freedom, and the way the entire town judges them on the assumption that they slept together seems inappropriately nosy.

3 The Road Trip To Harvard

Gilmore Girls 10 Episodes Everyone Loves But Havent Aged Well

Fans really love the second season episode “The Road Trip To Harvard” as it’s fun to watch Rory and Lorelai go on a bit of a vacation. Up until this point, they were always hanging out in Stars Hollow, so this was a new location.

Unfortunately, what seemed like a sweet and innocent road trip feels problematic now. While it seemed fine back then because Lorelai decided not to marry Max so she wanted some time and space, pulling Rory out of school and literally disappearing for a few days doesn’t seem like a great parental decision.

2 The Big One

Gilmore Girls 10 Episodes Everyone Loves But Havent Aged Well

Does Rory get into Harvard? What about Yale or Princeton? Fans eagerly awaited the good news, as it seemed like Rory would get into at least one of these Ivy Leagues, and this season three episode is a lot of fun.

It wouldn’t seem so entertaining now, though, as when everyone finds out that Paris had sex with her boyfriend Jamie, she’s definitely slut-shamed a little bit. The tone is that “good girls” who study hard (girls like Rory and Paris) wouldn’t make that kind of choice, especially not when college acceptance letters were being mailed out. This episode would need to be changed before airing today.

1 Die, Jerk

In this season four episode, Rory reviews a ballet performance for Yale’s newspaper and says that the dancer is “like a hippo”.

This was meant to be funny at the time, as Gilmore Girls often showed Rory’s talent when it came to taking a boring assignment and running with it (like she did with news about a parking lot at Chilton in the first season). But this episode didn’t age well as Rory was insulting someone’s physical appearance and commenting on her weight. Now that fat-shaming is more widely recognized as problematic, this would just come off as a terrible way to criticize a performance. This is one time when fans really didn’t like Rory.
