Gilmore Girls 10 Of The Strangest Things About Kirk

Kik Gleason is a secondary character with a main character’s fandom. He was in 137 episodes of Gilmore Girls but some fans wanted even more of him. His quirks and unique points of view divided the residents of Stars Hollow; they either loved him or hated him.

But as intriguing and light-hearted as Kirk was, there were a few things over the course of seven seasons that didn’t always make sense. Like many characters on Gilmore Girls, Kirk also had inconsistencies that made viewers scratch their heads. And sadly, his role in A Year in the Life didn’t answer too many questions about his character.

10 Who Is Mick?

In “The Lorelais’ First Day At Chilton,” it’s Rory’s first day at Chilton and both Gilmore ladies are a bundle of nerves. But when Lorelai goes home later that day, she finds out that her mother sent a DSL team to her house. The DSL worker who approached Lorelai was none other than Kirk, but he went by a different name: Mick. Lorelai and Mick both introduced themselves to each other as it was the first time they’ve seen each other. It’s clear that the writers weren’t sure what to do with Sean Gunn’s character and called him Mick before deciding on Kirk in “Cinnamon’s Wake.”

9 Did He Grow Up In Stars Hollow Or Not?

Mick wasn’t just a DSL worker; he also worked at Doose’s Market. He scolded Miss Patty for taste-testing different fruits and veggies while she was shopping, which prompted her to introduce herself to him. It was then that Kirk realized how long Miss Patty had been in the town and that he had a lot to learn about Stars Hollow before doing that again.

Oddly enough, later in the series, it’s been said that Kirk and Luke grew up together and have known each other since they were kids. If that were true, then wouldn’t he have known Miss Patty? Stars Hollow is a close, tight-knit community. They surely must have crossed paths before.

8 How Does He Have Time For All Of These Jobs?!

Gilmore Girls 10 Of The Strangest Things About Kirk

It’s been said that Kirk has had over 60 jobs throughout the original series. He’s been a swan delivery man, event coordinator, photographer, filmmaker, mailman, spy, t-shirt designer — the list goes on and on! However, with so many odd jobs, it’s hard to comprehend how Kirk was able to work them all. Was Stars Hollow desperate for worker and Kirk was the only person available? How was he capable of acquiring so many skills and being everywhere at once?

7 Does He Have Siblings Or Not?

Before Kirk met Lulu, he was typically seen by himself. He’s a loner who seemed comfortable that way. While there’s nothing wrong with Kirk enjoying his own company, it does seem odd considering he has said that he was the youngest of 12 siblings.

With a family of that size in a small town like Stars Hollow, why haven’t viewers seen any other Gleasons? Surely there would be a few who stayed around Stars Hollow and would meet up for coffee at Luke’s every now and then. And as a grown man who lives with his mother, it’s even weirder that Kirk is never seen with his siblings.

6 Why Was Kirk Selected To Be In The School Play?

Gilmore Girls 10 Of The Strangest Things About Kirk

In the fifth season, Luke and Lorelai volunteer their time to the local elementary school to help with the school’s production of Fiddler on the Roof. Oddly enough, when Luke showed up, Kirk was there as part of the play… He was cast as the main character Tevye. Lulu told Luke that the role of Tevye was demanding and that no child could pull it off. However, considering this is a school play and a way for kids to have an artistic outlet, it makes no sense as to why Kirk was part of the production.

5 How Was He Able To Run “Kirk’s Diner”?

Gilmore Girls 10 Of The Strangest Things About Kirk

In the seventh season, Taylor added a new camera system to the lights to catch those who ran the reds. Luke, of course, fought this idea but Taylor insisted. That afternoon, they did a ceremonial event to welcome the new camera system but Kirk accidentally drove the car into Luke’s Diner. The accident caused Luke’s to close down while they were under construction.

Shockingly, Kirk decided to create his own diner (Kirk’s Diner) outside of Luke’s while Luke’s was under construction. But knowing how power-hungry Taylor was with rules and codes, how in the world did he allow Kirk to run a business in the middle of Stars Hollow with zero permits?

4 Is Kirk The Show’s Antagonist?

Gilmore Girls 10 Of The Strangest Things About Kirk

As harmless as Kirk is, there are some fans who believe that he is the show’s antagonist. There were moments where he was unnecessarily controversial with his friends and townsfolk. When Luke and Lorelai broke up, he (and Taylor) teamed up to profit from their breakup and sold ribbons to see whose side the town was on. Kirk also threatened to sue Luke after he was the one who drove a car into Luke’s Diner (and never offered to pay for damages). An aggressive side to Kirk came out from time to time that made real trouble for the other characters.

3 His Relationship With His Mom

Gilmore Girls 10 Of The Strangest Things About Kirk

Part of Kirk’s schtick is that he lives with his mother. Even after entering a relationship with Lulu, he continued living in his mother’s basement. Although he and his mother weren’t seen together, he was a complete mama’s boy. Knowing this, it makes no sense that his mother wouldn’t make him a basket in season 2’s “A-Tisket, A-Tasket.”

While Jackson was trying to outbid Kirk for the basket that Sookie made, Kirk admitted that he’s never had his own basket before. His mother made a basket for all of his siblings except for him. If they were as close as he claims, why wouldn’t she make one for her supposed favorite child?

2 His Night Terrors

Gilmore Girls 10 Of The Strangest Things About Kirk

When Lorelai and Sookie invited their closest friends to stay overnight for a test run of the Dragonfly Inn, Kirk was petrified. He has been with Lulu romantically but he had never spent the night with her. As he told Luke, this was because of his night terrors. Whenever he had them, he typically woke up naked on the roof.

This doesn’t necessarily match other scenes. In “Pulp Friction,” Kirk moves out of his mother’s home and spends the night at Lorelai’s and even in Michel’s camper van. And while he sleeps naked, wasn’t running around town and waking up on roofs.

1 Why Not Bid On Another House?

When Luke and Lorelai became serious, he wanted to buy the Twickham house because he envisioned them having kids and staying in Stars Hollow. However, when Luke put a bid on it, he was outbid by none other than Kirk. As it turned out, Kirk saved nearly a quarter of a million dollars and wanted the house. While this happens in real estate often, if Kirk was as close to Luke as he seemed, why didn’t he look for another house? Why did a single man need a house as big as the Twickham house?
