While many Gilmore Girls fans enjoy Rory and Logan’s relationship, viewers often debate Rory’s boyfriends, Dean and Jess, as she dates both of them during her high school years. But Rory has another major love interest while at Chilton, and that’s her wealthy and confident classmate Tristan.

While Tristan seemed like a jerk at first, since he insulted Rory by calling her “Mary” and teased her at every opportunity, Rory got to know him and realized that he might not be so terrible. It’s true that Rory and Tristan never officially dated, and she continued her romance with Dean, but what if Rory had made a different decision? When thinking about Rory’s love life, it’s interesting to compare Tristan and Dean.

10 Tristan: Rory Was Interested In Him, Despite Dating Dean

Based on Rory and Tristan’s early interactions, it would be tough to say that Rory liked him at all. Tristan clearly liked Rory, and that’s why he referred to her as “Mary,” but Rory was swept up at the beginning of her relationship with Dean and didn’t pay Tristan much attention.

For a while, Rory barely answered whenever Tristan spoke to her, and she found him to be totally frustrating. But as time went on, she was a bit nicer to him, and it seemed like he had caught her eye, even though she was already dating Dean. Maybe if she had allowed herself to think about him as an option, their relationship might have grown.

9 Dean: He Was A Solid, Stable First Boyfriend

Rory and Dean began dating in the first season of Gilmore Girls, and it became clear that he was a solid and stable person for Rory.

Rory had never been in a relationship before, and while she was full of nerves and butterflies, Dean made her feel safe. They took things slow, enjoying their time together, watching movies, and talking about books. Since Rory was figuring out what a relationship even meant, Dean was the best person for her at this time.

8 Tristan: He And Rory Bonded (And Kissed) At A Party

When Dean broke up with Rory for not saying that she loved him, Rory and Lane went to a party, and Rory kissed Tristan.

It was a romantic moment, or it would have been if Rory hadn’t started crying and run out of the room, realizing that she had stronger feelings for Dean and that she missed him. Rory and Tristan did have chemistry, though, and they bonded in this scene, as Tristan confessed that he had experienced a painful break-up and that he wasn’t as secure as Rory thought he was. If Rory and Dean hadn’t gotten back together, this scene could have led to a romance between Tristan and Rory.

7 Dean: He Genuinely Loved Rory

Dean could be problematic in his behavior toward Rory, but he did love her, and this is another reason why it was good that Rory chose to stay in this relationship.

Tristan did enjoy his banter in the hallways of Chilton with Rory, and chances are that they could have enjoyed a sweet relationship if things progressed to that level. But it’s hard to know if Tristan would have been able to commit to Rory and focus on her, as he often had a happy-go-lucky attitude due to his wealth and privilege.

6 Tristan: Their Relationship Didn’t Seem So Complicated

Rory and Tristan began getting to know each other, and Rory realized that he was more sensitive than she thought.

While Rory’s relationship with Dean was complicated, things seemed much simpler with Tristan. If Rory picked Tristan, they might not have experienced so much tension.

5 Dean: Lorelai Liked Him

Lorelai had a problem with Logan because he was rich and arrogant, and it seems like she would have felt the same way about Tristan.

Dean was a better choice for Rory because Lorelai genuinely liked him and seemed to approve of his background since he came from a nice family and he was a hard worker and polite, friendly, kind person. On the other hand, it’s hard to imagine Lorelai liking Tristan if she ever met him, as it’s likely that he would tease Lorelai or act like a know-it-all.

4 Tristan: He Understood And Loved Rory’s Ambition

Tristan was interested in Rory because he liked how smart she is. It also seems like he enjoyed her self-confidence and the way she never let him down easily.

While Dean enjoyed Rory’s intelligence, he did find it to be an issue sometimes, as he wasn’t confident that things would remain the same between them once she went away to college. On the other hand, Tristan seemed to like Rory’s hard work and love of academics much more, and, at the very least, he understood it better since they shared the same workload and pressures at school.

3 Dean: He Was More Optimistic And Less Jaded Than Tristan

Tristan had known Paris and his other rich classmates since childhood as they had been all running in the same social circles, and he was jaded and cynical about his life and his future.

While Rory found Tristan interesting, she thought more highly of Dean, who was a much more optimistic person. Rory liked being around people who thought their future was as bright as her own was, and she was attracted to Dean’s calm and gentle personality and how he generally seemed to be in a good mood.

2 Tristan: He Was Upfront About His Feelings, With No Strings Attached

While Dean did tell Rory that he loved her, he did so on their three-month anniversary, and there was a string attached: Rory had to say it back right at that moment. Since she wasn’t ready and felt overwhelmed, he ended the relationship.

Rory did love Dean, and she was able to tell him a little while later, but Tristan was able to let Rory know that he had feelings for her, and he didn’t have any conditions attached. This felt much healthier.

1 Dean: He Respected Rory’s Stars Hollow Life

Gilmore Girls fans think that Stars Hollow is an ideal home, and since Dean moved there at the beginning of season 1, he definitely understood that it’s a special place.

Rory was right to stay with Dean because he understood her life in her small town, and he liked how wholesome and charming it was. If Rory had picked Tristan, it’s possible that he would have made fun of Stars Hollow and had a hard time visiting since he grew up in a much different world.
