As soon as fans are introduced to Rory on Gilmore Girls, it’s clear that she’s the “golden child” of the charming small town she grew up in. The townspeople love her, she has a long list of people she can call on for help if necessary, and everyone sees her as a kind and thoughtful girl.

But Rory wasn’t a perfect girlfriend and she wasn’t without her faults as a resident of Stars Hollow, either. While sometimes Rory lived up to the high standards that everyone put on her, there were many times on the show when she behaved badly.

10 Golden Child: She Was Always Involved In The Stars Hollow Festivals And Town Events

While many people love the fall season, it’s safe to say that it’s a way of life for those living in Stars Hollow. Gilmore Girls featured many town events and some of them celebrated the time of pretty leaves and cool weather, such as the Autumn Festival where Lane and Rory wore pilgrim costumes.

These festivals don’t really exist but Rory definitely enjoyed being part of them. This makes her the golden child of Stars Hollow, as she would have never dreamed of sitting any of them out. She liked being involved and she was someone whom everyone could count on.

9 Didn’t Deserve The Hype: She Never Respected Dean And Lindsay’s Marriage

Rory never seemed to think that Dean and Lindsay’s marriage meant anything. She slept with Dean even though he was married and Lorelai was really upset to learn about this.

If Rory really was the golden child of her town, why didn’t she think before she acted? Why didn’t she realize that Dean moved on and was trying to build his own life? This was definitely one of the worst things that Rory did and also one of the most confusing.

8 Golden Child: Had Big Academic Dreams

In the pilot of Gilmore Girls, it was clear that Rory was bored by her classes at Stars Hollow High. She was working on a class assignment while her nail-painting classmates looked on, amazed she was actually doing schoolwork.

Rory left her high school and started going to Chilton, where the academic challenges were greater. Though this meant less time in Stars Hollow, Rory lived up to her golden child reputation by shooting for the top.

7 Didn’t Deserve The Hype: She Didn’t Want To Be Taylor’s Ice Cream Queen

In the season 4 premiere “Ballrooms and Biscotti,” Taylor wanted Rory to be the Ice Cream Queen. Instead of asking her if she wanted to hold that role, he went ahead and gave it to her and made posters with her face on them.

Rory said that she didn’t have time she was going to Yale, which made Taylor upset. Rory said to her mom, “I mean, I’ve always had time for the town in the past, and now suddenly I don’t? Am I changing? I don’t wanna change. I don’t wanna be the anti-town girl. I’m not Daria.” While Rory felt bad about this, it didn’t change her behavior.

6 Golden Child: When The Town Helped Her After Her Break-Up With Dean

While Rory and Dean shared some great times, no one liked watching him end their relationship in the first season.

The town was always going to take Rory’s side as she was the golden child and no one really knew Dean since he had just moved there. After this devastating moment in Rory’s life, the residents of Stars Hollow were there for her. Luke was willing to do anything he could and the other characters gave Rory their love and support. While Rory made some mistakes, this was a moment when she deserved all the hype that she got, as it was unfair of Dean to walk away from their relationship without even wanting to talk about what happened.

5 Didn’t Deserve The Hype: The Charity Picnic Auction Became All About Rory’s Love Triangle

Gilmore Girls fans debate Rory’s two main love interests Jess and Dean, along with Logan, the boyfriend she meets at Yale. There were some dramatic moments in the second season that pointed to a Jess/Rory/Dean love triangle.

In the season 2 episode “A-Tisket, A-Tasket,” the town had a charity picnic auction, and residents could bid on a basket and a date. Jess wanted to spend time with Rory so he spent more money than Dean and won the chance to enjoy a picnic basket with her. This created a big scene when the focus should have been on charity and the town hosting a fun event.

4 Golden Child: She Was Nicer To Jess Than Most People When He Moved To Stars Hollow

When Jess started living with his uncle Luke, Lorelai and the rest of the Stars Hollow residents were definitely skeptical. They weren’t sure that Luke knew how to take on the challenge of a teenager, and they didn’t love Jess, who was surly and rebellious.

Rory didn’t care what other people thought and was sweet to Jess from the moment she met him. She liked that he was smart and felt bonded to him since they both read a lot. Rory proved that she was the golden child because she wanted to be polite and respectful to anyone who lived in her beloved quirky small town.

3 Didn’t Deserve The Hype: She And Lorelai Poked Fun At Town Meetings

While the town meetings on Gilmore Girls are definitely hilarious, it never seemed like Rory and Lorelai were that respectful of them.

If Rory was really one of the best residents of her town, it seems like she would take these meetings more seriously. She would have issues that she wanted to discuss or would at least tell her mom to stop treating the meetings like a form of entertainment that needed snacks and gossip.

2 Golden Child: She Came Back And Ran The Stars Hollow Gazette

Rory started working on the Stars Hollow Gazette in the Netflix revival A Year In The Life. The newspaper needed an editor and she was more than happy to fill in.

This proved that Rory was still a beloved figure in Stars Hollow, as she would never have dreamed of leaving this paper in the lurch. She wanted to be there for her town and she felt compelled to help out. If Rory didn’t care about her town and the people in it, she never would have done this.

While Rory made mistakes as a writer, she always had big dreams that she was going to chase.

Rory always planned to move away from Stars Hollow and work for a big newspaper or publication. But even though she loved where she came from, she never thought that she could move back home and be successful. This seems strange because couldn’t she freelance and still travel and have a great, balanced life? If she really loved her town, why did she act like she was above it?
