Gilmore Girls 5 Times Taylor Was The Worst Part Of Stars Hollow (& 5 Times He Was The Town Hero)

Taylor Doose is one of the quirky reoccurring characters on Gilmore Girls. He’s a small-town guy who wants the best for Stars Hollow, and he has no qualms with being the “bad guy” if it means setting rules for the town to make it safe. But thanks to his rule-abiding ways and plethora of knowledge for the area, Taylor can come off as an annoying know-it-all. People like Luke respect Taylor but cannot stand him.

But is Taylor as annoying as people like Lorelai and Luke make him out to be? When fans really think about it, Taylor is kind of like the Mayor of Stars Hollow. He just wants the town’s people to be happy, thriving, and safe. Sure, he’s overbearing and pompous but Stars Hollow seems to be the only thing Taylor really has. Perhaps people have been too hard on Taylor for too long (or, maybe not…).

10 The Worst: He Acted Immaturely With Lorelai’s Plan For The Dragonfly Inn

Gilmore Girls 5 Times Taylor Was The Worst Part Of Stars Hollow (& 5 Times He Was The Town Hero)

In “Chicken or Beef,” Taylor makes Lorelai’s life a living hell as she’s trying to the Dragonfly Inn off the ground. Taylor told her he couldn’t approve the needed changes for the inn because of the Stars Hollow Historical Preservation Society. She brings up the changes at the town meeting and the only person against her expansion was Taylor.

When she finally hunted him down for an inspection, he admitted that he selfishly wanted the space for his own ice cream truck… They eventually came to an agreement. He would approve her changes and he would park his truck outside of Luke’s.

9 Hero: He’s The Reason Why Stars Hollow Is So Special

Considering Taylor is the town selectman, he runs all of the town hall meetings. Essentially, nothing can be done in or around Stars Hollow without Taylor knowing about it.

He’s also apart of the Town Beautification Committee, meaning he’s constantly trying to make Stars Hollow special enough to attract tourists. Taylor’s life is protecting Stars Hollow and that should be acknowledged and appreciated every once and a while.

8 The Worst: He Made A Conjoining Window Without Telling Luke

Gilmore Girls 5 Times Taylor Was The Worst Part Of Stars Hollow (& 5 Times He Was The Town Hero)

With Luke owning some major real estate in Stars Hollow, he rented out the space next to Luke’s Diner to Taylor so that he could open up his old-fashioned soda shop. Luke didn’t want to be that close to Taylor but some way or another, Taylor always gets his way. And while the soda shop was a cute idea for Stars Hollow, Taylor went too far when he added a conjoining window between his soda shop and Luke’s Diner.

As the building owner, Luke should have been notified about this massive decision because he owns the space and owns Luke’s. As always, Taylor acts like he’s the higher authoritative figure and did it anyway.

7 Hero: The Stars Hollow Hockey Game

“Face-Off” was a huge episode in the third season because it’s the episode Rory finds out Dean has a new girlfriend (while she’s being ignored by her new boyfriend) and Emily sees Trix kissing a mysterious man in a tracksuit. It’s also the episode where Taylor shows his team spirit for the Minutemen, Stars Hollow’s hockey team.

The team were semifinalists with a huge game around the corner. Taylor promoted the game, made buttons to give to viewers, and even gave them a discount to Doose’s if they wore the button. He really cared about the city and its student-athletes. And while the Minutemen lost the game, Taylor got a huge crowd together to support them. Even Rory showed up!

6 The Worst: He Volunteered Rory For a Job She Didn’t Want

When Taylor’s soda shop first opened, he posted a big picture of Rory outside his shop and around town, calling her the Ice Cream Queen. Rory, however, had no idea that she was honored with the title and didn’t appreciate her picture being all over town wearing a crown.

When she approached Taylor, he didn’t understand why she was upset and refused to take down the pictures of her. To make matters worse, there was a presentation of sorts where Rory was supposed to sit on a throne as the queen. Taylor completely embarrassed Rory by telling the audience that the queen was simply too busy to show up and made her look ungreatful. As a grown man, this was low.

5 Hero: Where Would Stars Hollow Go Food Shopping Without Doose’s?

There’s a larger grocery store outside of town that Lorelai and Luke have shopped at in the past but when they need basic groceries, they go to Doose’s Market. It’s hard to think of Stars Hollow without Doose’s.

So many iconic moments happened there. From Dean getting a job there to Rory having her first kiss there, Doose’s sometimes feels like more than a grocery store. It’s a Stars Hollow staple.

4 The Worst: The Trafic Light That Wasn’t Needed

Gilmore Girls 5 Times Taylor Was The Worst Part Of Stars Hollow (& 5 Times He Was The Town Hero)

In the seventh season, Taylor suddenly felt like the people of Stars Hollow were no longer safe and thought a traffic light in front of Luke’s Diner would be best. In all the years that fans have been watching Gilmore Girls, it’s hard to think of a time where there were accidents in front of Luke’s Diner. Nevertheless, whatever Taylor says goes.

When Taylor showed off the new crosswalk and light, Kirk accidentally drove his car into Luke’s Diner. This was the complete opposite of what the light was for, and now Luke had to close down shop for repairs!

3 Hero: The Museum Was A Good Idea In Theory

When Joshua Twickham passed away, Taylor thought his gorgeous home would be the perfect space for a history museum of Stars Hollow.

As odd as it would seem to have a history museum in the town, it wasn’t the worst idea Taylor had. Having a museum would bring more people to the town, which means more money to support local shop owners. It’s also a wonderful way to show town pride.

2 The Worst: His Spin On Luke & Lorelai’s Relationship

Gilmore Girls 5 Times Taylor Was The Worst Part Of Stars Hollow (& 5 Times He Was The Town Hero)

Luke and Lorelai always knew they were playing with fire when they started dating. If they made their relationship work then all would be right in the world. But if it ended, the town would be divided, and where would Lorelai get her coffee?!

To add fuel to the fire, Taylor had Kirk pass out pink and blue ribbons to those in Stars Hollow when Lorelai and Luke broke up. Those on Luke’s side would choose a blue ribbon and those on Lorelai’s side, a pink ribbon. It doesn’t take a genius to realize how petty and inappropriate this is.

1 Hero: He’s The Reason Why The Dragonfly Inn Has Guests

To be fair, without Lorelai’s hard work and dedication to having her own business, the Dragonfly Inn would remain a fantastic idea. It was because of her that it became a reality.

However, Lorelai cannot deny that without Taylor’s drive to increase tourism, the Dragonfly Inn would have no guests. He makes Stars Hollow a quaint place to live and visit, which is why people stay at the inn in the first place. If Taylor ignored Stars Hollow’s growth, who in the world would stay at a small inn in a town like Stars Hollow?
