Gilmore Girls 5 Times We Related To Luke (& 5 Times We Didnt)

Beloved for his cozy diner and devotion to Lorelai, Luke Danes is a popular Gilmore Girls character who fans have always rooted for. At first, it seemed like the restaurant owner was the strong and silent type, but viewers quickly got to know Luke and realized that he might be surly, but he’s kind and funny, too.

Luke’s life changed, but also stayed the same between the pilot and the revival, and one thing that never changed was his desire to run his diner and live a simple life free of drama. While there are many moments on Gilmore Girls when fans found Luke relatable, it was hard to understand a few of his decisions.

10 Related: He Was Frustrated With Jess’s Bad Attitude

Gilmore Girls 5 Times We Related To Luke (& 5 Times We Didnt)

Jess was really mean to his uncle Luke and it was tough to watch, as Luke did nothing but try to help him. He created a space for Jess in his apartment, he tried to give him advice, and he was there for him.

Luke became frustrated with Jess and his terrible attitude pretty quickly, and no one could blame him for that. Many viewers love Jess and Rory’s romance but can admit that Jess was immature and needed to treat people in his life much better. He should have thanked Luke for everything he was doing for him, but instead, he rolled his eyes and made sarcastic and bitter comments.

9 Didn’t: He Hated Cell Phones

Gilmore Girls 5 Times We Related To Luke (& 5 Times We Didnt)

Luke had a “no cell phones” rule and the sign behind the counter to match. It’s hard for fans to relate to Luke’s hatred of cell phones.

While no one wants customers to spend hours chatting and gossiping on the phone without ordering anything, this seemed like a pretty extreme rule. Luke could have relaxed a bit more about cell phones and even learned to love the convenience and ease of them. Most people love their phones and enjoy texting and social media and listening to podcasts, so it’s hard to be on Luke’s side here.

8 Related: He Pined Over Lorelai For Years

Gilmore Girls 5 Times We Related To Luke (& 5 Times We Didnt)

While it’s frustrating for fans to watch two TV characters stare longingly at each other without actually dating, it builds so much tension that it’s hard to stop watching. Luke and Lorelai are a beloved, classic TV couple who seemed meant to be.

Luke pined over Lorelai for years, scared to admit that he loved her, and he was always so happy whenever she brought her fun, frantic energy into the diner. Luke’s crush on Lorelai is one of the most relatable things about him. While people say that life is too short to not share feelings with someone, that’s easier said than done, and it can be nerve-wracking to imagine asking them out. Thankfully, Luke and Lorelai figured it out.

7 Didn’t: He Didn’t Share April With Lorelai

Gilmore Girls 5 Times We Related To Luke (& 5 Times We Didnt)

There’s a lot of controversy surrounding April Nardini and not everyone loves her or thinks that she should have been on Gilmore Girls.

Most fans agree that Luke should have told Lorelai about April immediately, as he handled this so badly. He was not only hesitant to share this huge, life-changing news with the person he supposedly loved, but he didn’t want Lorelai to be around April, either. Fans didn’t support Luke’s decision and it’s also not a relatable one. Most people would want their partner to be involved here. Lorelai had raised a daughter on her own and yet Luke couldn’t seem to imagine that Lorelai would be helpful here.

6 Related: He Had His Own Way Of Dealing With Grief

Gilmore Girls 5 Times We Related To Luke (& 5 Times We Didnt)

Lorelai was shocked that Luke had a “dark day” and went off to be alone on the anniversary of his father’s death. It was even more surprising that the whole town seemed to know about this and she didn’t.

Luke had his own way of dealing with his grief, and this was what worked for him. Fans can relate to Luke here, as everyone has to move on in the way that makes sense to them. He wasn’t comfortable telling even Lorelai about it, and while she seemed hurt that he couldn’t confide in her, this was what Luke needed to do.

5 Didn’t: He Didn’t Support Breastfeeding

Gilmore Girls 5 Times We Related To Luke (& 5 Times We Didnt)

In a scene that doesn’t hold up today, Luke complained about a woman breastfeeding in public, and he had a very offensive speech. He said, “This cannot be sanitary” and said, “When did that become acceptable? In the old days, a woman would never consider doing that in public. They’d go find a barn or a cave or something. I mean, it’s indecent; this is a diner, not a peep show.”

No one can relate to Luke here, as there’s no reason to shame parents for breastfeeding. Why was Luke so upset about something that had nothing to do with him?

4 Related: He Became Easily Annoyed With Kirk And Taylor

Gilmore Girls 5 Times We Related To Luke (& 5 Times We Didnt)

While Luke tried to be polite to Kirk, it was clear that the Stars Hollow resident definitely tested his patience, as he ate at the diner on a regular basis and talked a lot to Luke. And Luke had to deal with Taylor on a regular basis, especially when Taylor opened an old-fashioned ice cream shop next door.

Luke wasn’t always the calmest, most peaceful person in his small town, and he became easily frustrated with Kirk and Taylor. No one could blame him for this, as they did try his patience, and sometimes it seemed like Taylor was trying to get under his skin on purpose. Many people can relate to Luke here, as it’s tough to be totally calm and composed all the time.

3 Didn’t: He Married Nicole Quickly

Gilmore Girls 5 Times We Related To Luke (& 5 Times We Didnt)

Luke said he didn’t believe in fate, but many would argue that he and Lorelai have always been true loves and soulmates.

When Luke married the lawyer Nicole, it was surprising since he had been on his own for a while, besides his romance with Rachel. It was hard to relate to how quickly Luke and Nicole got married. They hadn’t been together very long, they didn’t know each other very well, and they didn’t seem very well-matched, either. It was a surprising decision for someone like Luke to make. He typically followed the same routine and didn’t stray too far from that schedule.

2 Related: He Was Scared Of Emily Gilmore

Gilmore Girls 5 Times We Related To Luke (& 5 Times We Didnt)

Emily Gilmore was always intelligent and didn’t miss a beat, which meant that her insults were legendary.

Luke always seemed pretty nervous around Emily, and to say that he was terrified of her would be an understatement. Since Luke wasn’t a fancy person who cared about wealth or etiquette, it was no wonder that he and Emily didn’t see eye to eye. It didn’t help that Emily never acted like she approved of Luke. Viewers could relate to Luke’s concern whenever he had to see Emily, as she can definitely be intimidating.

1 Didn’t: He Didn’t Understand Surrogacy

While fans are very invested in Luke and Lorelai’s romance and were interested to learn that they wanted to have a baby in the revival A Year In The Life, Luke acted very strangely about the process.

When the couple met with Paris at her fertility clinic, Luke proved he didn’t understand how surrogacy works. He acted like he would have to sleep with a woman in order for this to happen. It was meant to be funny, but it was confusing and offensive and added to the negative stigma surrounding surrogacy (as did the entirety of the surrogacy subplot, as this review masterfully explains). No one could relate to Luke in this scene, why didn’t he have a better grasp of the situation?
