Obviously, fans flock to Gilmore Girls for the characters and stories, the lives and loves they care about so deeply. A trip back to Stars Hollow is defined by the interactions between some of the most lovable stars from the series. Yet, the show also occupies different facets of brilliance by appealing to all the senses that elevate a series to greatness.

Fashion has always been a major talking point in the comedy-drama’s history. Just like a period drama about the British royal family or an origin story for a Disney villain, fashion is as intrinsic to the story as the patented, crackling dialogue of Amy Sherman-Palladino. But, on Gilmore Girls, there were just as many eyebrow-raising, impractical outfit choices as there were lavish ones.

10 Sookie’s Knit Ensemble

The only thing that’s practical about this knitwear ensemble from Sookie (Melissa McCarthy) is that it would keep her warm during the coldest nights Connecticut has to offer. Aside from that, it’s entirely nonsensical. It’s bulky, and it looks incredibly itchy and uncomfortable. Plus, it doesn’t allow for a whole lot of movement. Some knit clothes are fine, but a whole outfit? It’s impractical at nearly every turn.

9 Thin Scarves

The thin scarves appear a couple of times on Gilmore Girls, but they never make a lick of sense. They’re worn by Rory (Alexis Bledel) and Lorelai (Lauren Graham), but there seems to be no actual scarf-centric function for them. They cover only a small patch of the neck for warmth; it’d be like wearing a turtleneck with a hole in the middle of the neck covering. The only reason to wear them is for style, but they are entirely impractical.

8 Vow Renewal Dress

There were a lot of people serving some regrettable looks at the vow renewal ceremony between Emily (Kelly Bishop) and Richard (Edward Hermann), but the one outfit that is impractical is the dress Lorelai wears.

It seems like more of an inconvenience than anything and has always served as a distraction from the heart of the storyline. Fans have always despised it, but the shiny purple glow really only serves the purpose of diverting attention towards Lorelai instead. No one in real life would ever wear something so ill-fitting, with the garment bunched at the hips and dangling everywhere else.

7 Cheetah Cowboy Hat

Speaking of outfit choices that are as abhorrent as they are impractical, the cheetah cowboy hat Lorelai wears is one of the most gauche. Not only is it a nonsensical look for Lorelai to be sporting, but it’s also just over-the-top.

What purpose could a cowboy hat serve someone in suburban Connecticut? It’s just a cumbersome thing to worry about all day. Not to mention, she adds a rhinestone sweater to the hat, making the whole thing worse. With an outfit choice like that, the impracticality comes from the fact that the whole day revolves around it.

6 Tight Bucket Hat

While the cheetah cowboy hat is an absurd choice, it’s not quite as impractical as the tight, narrow bucket hat that Lorelai wears in one of the series’ most egregious instances of dated fashion.

The dated aspect is not the impractical one, though. It’s the fact that her bucket hat isn’t even accomplishing the job a bucket hat is supposed to. It’s so narrow around her head that it seems to blot out absolutely nothing and somehow protect her from even less. Go for the wider brim next time, Lorelai.

5 Rory’s Uniform

It would be easy to say that the outfit Lorelai wears to Rory’s first day at Chilton is impractical, but it was a last-second decision. She made do with what she had and seemed to be dressed at least somewhat comfortably.

Rory’s uniform, on the other hand? Why should uniforms like these ever be required for students? Why does this awkward and dated—even for the time—outfit improve morale at the school or in the students? The fact is that it doesn’,t and it would be more practical for Rory to wear whatever makes her comfortable to learn.

4 Rory’s Tiny Handbag

Not to keep ragging on Rory too much, but, sometimes, it’s hard to make sense of a tiny handbag. Why does she accessorize her outfits with them—and multiple times, no less! It’s an even more awkward thing to carry around all day than a cowboy hat.

Sure, she can fit a few items into a tiny handbag, but, for the most part, it’s just for show. It might be a quality style affix, but it registers at a zero on the practicality scale.

3 Jess’ Baggy Jeans

It’s hard to label the outfits of the men on Gilmore Girls as impractical when the first one fans think about is jeans, a flannel, and a backward hat. Hard to go wrong there for Luke.

On the other hand, the outfits typically sported by Jess (Milo Ventimiglia) leave some practicality to be desired. The baggy jeans are the worst offender, though. Not only do they not look good, but it’s just a task to pull them up repeatedly during the day. They will always be total nonsense.

2 Matching Charity Outfits

When the Booster Club puts on a fashion show for charity, it allows for some fun scenes between Lorelai and Emily. However, the outfits they model make no sense for the intended purpose of the fashion show. They’re quite garish, and the matching nature of them, especially in a mother-daughter capacity, is no key selling point. How could anyone expect genuinely impactful funds to be raised with this impractical, uncomfortable-looking ensemble?

1 Marathon Heels

Yes, the heels worn by Rory and Lorelai are part of the point of “They Shoot Gilmores, Don’t They?” They have to dress in vintage outfits for the sake of the marathon dance contest, so this means that high heels are required.

Yet, Lorelai still breaks off a part of her heel, and the girls’ feet will never be the same again. Rules be damned, this is a highly impractical outfit choice when one expects to be dancing on them for hours that bleed into days.
