Glee 10 Things You Never Knew About Sue Sylvester

Glee’s main antagonist Sue Sylvester definitely counts as one of the best TV characters ever. She was unapologetic-ally evil, not caring whether she offended the students of the William McKinley High School of her fellow colleagues. But despite her polarizing personality, her career prospects always kept getting better and better.

Celebrated actress Jane Marie Lynch—who portrayed Sue in the series—earned several Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild awards for her performances. Sue opened and closed the dialogue in Glee. Her last words, which were more fitting for a hero than a protagonist, were even more iconic. She said the final words as she was rededicating the school auditorium as a way to honor the fallen Finn Hudson’s memory.

Her words were: “It takes a lot of bravery to look around and see the world not as it is, but as it should be. A world where the quarterback becomes best friends with the gay kid and the girl with the big nose ends up on Broadway. Glee is about finding a world like that, and finding the courage to open up your heart and sing about it. That’s what glee club is. And for the longest time, I thought that was silly, and now I think it’s just about the bravest thing anyone could do.”

Sue acquired another name in the Season 5 premiere titled “Love, Love, Love.” This is the same episode in which she engaged in devious schemes that eventually made her get appointed as the interim principal of McKinley High School.

Sue changed her name to Susan Rodham Sylvester. This is an interesting choice because Rodham is also the name of Hilary Clinton. In years to come, Sue would also join politics and become the first female Vice President of the United States. However, it was never revealed whether Hilary Clinton was the inspiration behind the name.

7 Her False Heritage

For a long time in the show, Sue claimed to be of Native American and Trinidadian heritage. However, she was exposed as a liar when she made an appearance on Geraldo Rivera’s fictional show in the tenth episode of Season 6 titled “The Rise and Fall of Sue Sylvester.”

Geraldo provided evidence to prove that Sue didn’t have Trinidadian roots. She also didn’t play the tambourine for Wilson Philips as she claimed. Neither did she sleep with Michael Bolton and one of the Baldwin brothers. Sue had long claimed that Bolton was the father of her child.

The camper Jo in the Cartoon Network animated series Total Drama is based on Sue. This was confirmed by the director of the series, Todd Kauffman. Just like Sue, Jo was competitive, power-hungry and had a very harsh personality.

Jo’s fashion choice was similar to Sue’s as well. She wore tracksuits most of the time. She also enjoyed giving others nicknames instead of using their actual names. Jo appeared in 15 episodes of Total Drama before exiting.

5 Political Affiliations

The little details of her political rise weren’t expounded upon. They are only implied upon in a flash-forward scene in Season 6. After her lies were exposed, she joined politics and had a quick rise to the top. She also announced that she would run for President in 2024.

Sue’s many jobs might be hard to keep up with but here’s a list of all of them. She worked as a Yoga Instructor at the gym known as 23 Hour Fitness. She also worked as a News Reporter for a brief time. Emma who is a self-confessed local news junkie followed Sue’s segments with much dedication.

She was in charge of the Cheerios, the Aural Intensity and the diving team at different points. Lastly, she was the director of the dancing club known as Booty Camp.

3 She Hasn’t Had A Successful Relationship

Unlike other main characters like Will and Emma, Sue has been quite unlucky with love. She even married herself. For partners, she’s had a couple. In the eighth episode of Season One titled “Mash-Up,” she fell for Rod who invited her for a date. Sadly, she found him cheating. She tried to hit on Principal Figgins too but then shocked everyone by giving him a date-rape drug and blackmailing him to get her job back.

Sue also flirted with Will but nothing much came out of it since they hated each other more than they liked each other. Then there was the brief encounter with the Neil Patrick Harris character Bryan Ryan. Lastly, Sue dated Cooter to prove she wasn’t a member of the LGBTQ community but he left her and married Shannon.

2 Appearances

Glee 10 Things You Never Knew About Sue Sylvester

Sue is one of five main characters to appear in every single season of Glee. The others are Will, Artie, Kurt, and Rachel. However, unlike the other five, she didn’t appear in every single episode of the musical series.

This was because actress Jane Lynch had other commitments in earlier seasons of the series. But when her schedule freed up, she was made a more consistent main character like the rest. Interestingly, Lynch won more accolades for her performances in the earlier seasons than the later ones.

1 Her Age

There has been plenty of confusion surrounding Sue’s age. In the fifteenth episode of Season One titled “The Power of Madonna,” Sue did a monologue in which she stated that she was about to turn 30-years-old. But in the eighth episode of Season 2 titled “Furt” her dating app profile said she was 27.

In the twenty-first episode of Season 2 titled “Funeral,” it was stated her late sister was in her fifties when she died. In previous episodes, it was said that Sue and her late sister went to school together. If such was the case, the age gap can’t be that high.
