Glee 10 Worst First Dates the Characters Had

Glee ran for six seasons showcasing song, dance, and teen romance. The Fox musical dramedy focused on the budding relationship between quarterback Finn Hudson and Broadway baby Rachel Berry. But Glee was filled to the brim with plenty of ships that ranged from one-off jokes to “Will They/Won’t They” storylines.

As with most Ryan Murphy vehicles, it relied heavily on both comedy and shocking drama. So not only did innocent moments turn into first dates, but many first dates turned into utter disasters. Even adult characters like Will Schuster and Sue Sylvester were not immune to the embarrassing complications of starting relationships.

From “Finchel” to “Santofsky,” these are the worst first dates that you missed on Glee.

10 Santana, Brittany, & Finn

In “Hell-O,” Sue instructed both Brittany and Santana to seduce Finn to create friction within the glee club. Finn, fresh off of his breakup with Quinn Fabray, agrees to go on a date with the Cheerio duo. Instead, he took the role of the third wheel in this Breadstix outing as the girls gossiped and bad-mouthed fellow students. In fact, Santana ordered him to go out to the car to wait for them and leave his credit card.

While it was a horrible date for Finn, it made him realize that not taking a chance with Rachel was a mistake. As an added bonus, the seeds continued to be planted for the Brittany and Santana love story.

9 Kurt & Brittany

When Burt Hummel began to bond more with future stepson Finn, his openly gay son Kurt tried to regain his father’s attention by dressing in heteronormative clothing and tried to be straight during “Laryngitis.” Since Kurt was one of the only boys she had not yet made out with, Brittany asked Kurt out.

During their make-out session, Kurt was clearly uninterested in her affections and asked her what it was like to kiss boys. An honest conversation between Burt and Kurt soothed the discomfort between them, and Kurt returned to life as his true self. Brittany was not heartbroken in the slightest and continued to be friends with Kurt.

8 Sue Sylvester & Rod Remington

Local news anchor Rod Remington often came into contact with Sue when she filmed the “Sue’s Corner” segment. In the season one episode “Mash-Up,” he flirted heavily with her and asked the Cheerios coach out on a date where Rod mentioned that he liked to “swing.” He invited her to a swing dance competition to compete as his partner.

It appeared that there was a double entendre in his words because after Sue learned to swing dance from Will, she discovered Rod making out with his co-anchor. All while wearing a zoot suit, no less. Sue would return to school the following day to threaten Will with a punch in the face.

7 Ken & Emma

Football coach Ken Tanaka was the unlikely third portion of the many love triangles in Glee, this one involving teacher Will Schuster and guidance counselor Emma Pillsbury. He asked Emma out previously to a monster truck rally, and when she turned him down, he rubbed spit on her car.

But Ken quickly learned the truth in “Showmance” that Emma harbored feelings for Will. She agreed to go on an unseen date to Tulipalooza when he called her out on it, despite part of Ken’s pitch being, “I’ll put up with all your crazy.”

6 Kurt & Walter

Kurt started using dating apps in an attempt to move on from the love of his life, Blaine. He eventually got catfished when he agreed to meet Walter during the season six episode “The Hurt Locker, Part One.” Instead of someone his own age with a similar interest in Golden Girls, Kurt discovered that fifty-year-old Walter’s profile picture was a few decades out-of-date.

Walter admitted that he had previously been married with children and just came out of the closet the previous year. Kurt sympathized and the two continued with their date as friends, beginning a short relationship afterward.

5 Finn & Rachel

During a voice lesson in “Showmance,” Rachel suggested that she and Finn take a break and she presented a pre-planned picnic on the stage. In television circumstances, this was a sweet romantic gesture. In reality, Rachel’s behavior was obsessive and manipulative, and she completely ignored that Finn and Quinn were still dating.

Of course, karma intervened when their kiss resulted in Finn getting a little too “excited.” Embarrassed, he ran away and insisted that they pretend it never happened, leaving Rachel in tears.

4 Artie & Tina

In season one’s “Wheels,” Tina Cohen-Chang and Artie Abrams shared their first date and first kiss in the halls of McKinley. The entirety of the episode centered around New Directions acquiring wheelchairs for a dance number so that differently-abled student Artie could feel included.

These wheelchairs served as the center of Artie and Tina’s date with Tina racing down the hall in a wheelchair against Artie. Tina also chose this time to tell the truth about how she had been faking a stutter since the sixth grade to get out of making a speech. This ableist lie was the beginning of a very rocky relationship that ended off-screen before season two.

3 Will & Emma

In the midseason finale “Sectionals,” Will kissed Emma for the first time after thirteen episodes of romantic tension. When the show returned with “Hell-O,” they went on their first date and both learned that they both had issues that they needed to sort out. Emma revealed that she was still a virgin and her mysophobia made her uncomfortable with kissing and sexual intimacy.

On the other hand, Will had not been single since he was fifteen-years-old and did not know how to be in an adult relationship outside of his failed marriage to Terri. This became obvious when he cheated on Emma with Vocal Adrenaline coach Shelby Cochran.

2 Brody & Rachel

In the season four episode “Makeover,” Rachel had her first official date with fellow NYADA student, Brody. The date in Rachel’s apartment was sweet on the outside, eating pizza on the floor and bonding over secrets and the mood was interrupted by the arrival of Finn.

Though there were some red flags considering Brody immediately broke boundaries, promising they would just be friends before kissing her. Not to mention he ignored the opportunity to come clean about his background as a sex worker.

1 Santana & Karofsky

In “Born This Way,” Santana asked the deeply closeted school bully Dave Karofsky out for a coffee date at the Lima Bean with ulterior motives. She explained that this relationship she wanted to build would be a front, both acting as the other’s “beard” to regain status at McKinley High.

If Karofsky refused, Santana would out him to the entire school. Thus blackmail served as the foundation of their power couple front to win Prom King and Queen.
