God Of War 5 Gods Confirmed For Ragnarök (& 5 That Should Be Included)

With God Of War: Ragnarök aiming to put an end to the Norse era of the saga, many fans are looking forward to seeing what is in store for them. Deities will, of course, be a crucial aspect of this video game series and a few are already confirmed for the sequel.

The gaming experience would be enhanced by a range of other Gods who also serve the story and have been teased thus far, and the upcoming release may even be able to hint as to what’s in store for audiences next. Such a character-driven narrative needs to focus on these intriguing pieces of mythology in order to continue to build out the world further and the players on the board.

10 Confirmed: Kratos

Kratos is the titular God of War and the protagonist of the series, a title he earned after defeating Ares. Ragnarök will allow players to continue on their journey with the sympathetic Kratos, who appears to be boasting a new range of weapons.

While the father and Deity feel as if he is an original creation of the franchise, Kratos is actually pulled from Greek mythology and was the personification of strength. Some creative liberties might have been taken with this iteration of the character, but the ruthlessness commonly associated with Kratos is very much a characteristic of every version of the warrior.

9 Should Be Included: Odin

God Of War 5 Gods Confirmed For Ragnarök (& 5 That Should Be Included)

Odin, the All-Father, is one of the most powerful gods in the Norse Pantheon. His presence has already been felt in the God Of War franchise and while he hasn’t appeared as of yet, he could likely be making his might felt in the next installment.

Odin’s son, Baldur was the antagonist of the previous title and another one of Odin’s children will be a part of the sequel. Fans are certainly eager to test their might against the God of gods, and with Ragnarök approaching, the lord of Asgard will surely want to delay the inevitable destruction; his ravens have even been seen in-game before.

8 Confirmed: Thor

Thor will be making his debut in the next God Of War. Audiences are getting ready for one of the most accurate depictions of the God of Thunder to date, with Odinson looking to settle a score with Kratos in an all-out brawl.

The boss battle is likely going to be a legendary video game moment, but it’s still unclear what side Thor will ultimately fall on, especially with Loki’s appearance at play. Regardless, a Norse title wouldn’t feel complete without Thor and he is a welcome addition that certainly boasts a formidable weapon to defend against.

7 Should Be Included: Laufey

God Of War 5 Gods Confirmed For Ragnarök (& 5 That Should Be Included)

Laufey has been portrayed in a number of different forms in popular culture but for God Of War, she is nicknamed Faye and is a Frost Giant from Jötunheim. The second wife of Kratos and mother of Atreus supposedly met a dark end and is canonically dead in the series.

But with the underworld always open for departures, it would be intriguing for Laufey to turn up alive and be reunited with her family once more. Several questions need to be answered in the God of War sequel and it seems logical that Laufey should play a part in that considering she was at the heart of the mystery of the original.

6 Confirmed: Atreus

Atreus is the child of Laufey and Kratos in this game universe but has also been revealed to be Loki to the Norse people. His journey will continue alongside his father as they travel across the nine realms in the next stage of their quest. Once more, Atreus is very different from the mythological perspective.

The character is really a part of a much larger coming-of-age narrative but, traditionally, Atreus is actually King of Mycenae and a part of an incredibly corrupt family. The sequel should come to tell audiences how his life as Loki may take form and what part the child has to play in the destruction of the Pantheon.

5 Should Be Included: Surtr

God Of War 5 Gods Confirmed For Ragnarök (& 5 That Should Be Included)

For those who know their Norse mythology, Surtr is at the heart of Ragnarök, with the fiery Deity instructing his army of demons to cause death and destruction. His flaming sword may help strike down Asgard, but comic book fans may have already seen Surtur achieve this on both the big screen and the page.

With the sequel game exploring the annihilation of the Norse world as they know it, it seems fitting that Surtr would help to fulfill the role he is prophesied to complete. Fans may have already played through the Surtr themed quest in the previous game, which only adds to the argument that the God will show up soon.

4 Confirmed: Angrboða

God Of War 5 Gods Confirmed For Ragnarök (& 5 That Should Be Included)

In mythology, Angrboða is described as the mother of monsters, with Fenrir, the Midgard Serpent, and Hel all having been birthed from her. She’s also portrayed as the lover of Loki, and a giantess from Jötunheim. The game may be changing what fans know about her though.

It appears that her powers and abilities are quite different, being portrayed more as a seer and prophesizer. She may still be a love interest for Loki but her role in the story seems to be a lot bigger than that. As a shape-changer, though it’s plausible the character could serve as a twist boss battle towards God of War’s conclusion.

3 Should Be Included: Fenrir

God Of War 5 Gods Confirmed For Ragnarök (& 5 That Should Be Included)

Fenrir is mentioned far too many times in God Of War to not make an appearance at any stage. The character is famous for his quest to kill Odin at the end of it all and with that day approaching, it seems natural that the wolf would appear in some form.

This wouldn’t be the first time a wolf on this scale appears in the franchise but it would certainly serve as an interesting side quest on God of War at the very least if Fenrir doesn’t factor into the main campaign. In regards to boasting a battle, the beast could provide one of the toughest challenges yet.

2 Confirmed: Týr

God Of War 5 Gods Confirmed For Ragnarök (& 5 That Should Be Included)

Týr is the God of war in Norse mythology and therefore a natural rival for Kratos. The character has been confirmed for the sequel game and brings his intimidating presence. Much like he had to best Ares before him, Kratos might have to test his might against this beast of a man.

The character is also the God of Law and Honor, which means he will fight with some decency. As the half-brother to both Thor and Baldur as well, it will be interesting to see if the character has the opportunity to interact with the rest of his family, or perhaps serve his supposed justice for their fall.

1 Should Be Included: A New Pantheon

The God Of War franchise is heading in a new direction after the conclusion of this saga. With the God of War developers confirming that this will be the end of the Norse chapter of the story, there are so many other possibilities as to where the series could go in next in regards to other Pantheons.

Santa Monica Studios probably has a plan for the future considering the success of these titles. It’s plausible that they, therefore, bring in at least one other God from a different Pantheon to tease that path forward. Perhaps it will be a link to the past with the Roman Gods or something totally new such as the Egyptian Pantheon or even an original set of mythology.
