A piece of God of War fan art, depicting protagonists Kratos and Atreus journeying to Egypt, has resurfaced. The mythological action franchise started off in Greek mythology, before its 2018 installment ventured into a brand-new Norse mythological narrative. With God of War Ragnarok ending the Norse storyline, many fans are already looking ahead to where Kratos and Atreus’ epic adventure may take them.

Santa Monica Studios’ beloved God of War series began as an action-packed adaptation of Greek myth, with the bloodthirsty Spartan warrior Kratos at its center. While these early installments in the series included in-depth combat and an often emotional narrative, tonally they remained a bit shallow. Roaring rampage was Kratos’ primary emotion, and the series’ Greek era ended with the protagonist dead and the Greek world in ruins. 2018’s God of War brought the series into a brand-new mythology, and a more mature emotional tone was established with Kratos’ son Atreus. However, early concept art of God of War reveals that Santa Monica nearly went with Egyptian mythology instead, which would have drastically changed the hit game’s setting and supporting cast.

Now Twitter user Joe Miller has resurfaced a piece of God of War fan art which imagines Kratos and Atreus traveling to the world of Egyptian mythology. The beautiful piece, created by artist Eric Ryan, portrays the father and son duo in ancient Egyptian attire and wielding weapons more appropriate to the setting. Standing atop a sand dune, the two warriors gaze out over a pyramid, a sphinx and a large field of foes. Ghostly warriors and flying monsters challenge them, with a massive godly pharaoh standing ominously among the clouds. This Egyptian concept nearly came to fruition, and many fans believe that it will become reality after God of War Ragnarok.

While the upcoming game will only be the second title in God of War’s new era, Santa Monica Studio clearly has no interest in continuing the Norse saga after its release, stating that making more Norse games after Ragnarok would take too long. God of War creative director Cory Barlog explains that each new installment in the series takes about five years to make, which means that an entire trilogy would take a total of 15 years to craft. Given that Ragnarok will be built off the solid foundation laid by its predecessor, Barlog feels that the sequel will be able to round out the series’ Norse story without the need for a third title.

The God of War series has now set a precedence for transitioning between different mythological pantheons. The franchise started out in Greek myth and moved into Norse myth, so it is very likely that a third mythology will be explored in the future of the franchise. Given that Egypt was nearly used as a setting for 2018’s God of War, that extremely interesting and complex belief system would be a perfect place for Kratos and Atreus to go next. As demonstrated by Eric Ryan’s fan art, the pyramids and deserts of Egypt would make for a perfect God of War adventure.
