God Of War & GoW 3 Remastered Are Likely Getting PS5 Upgrades

Two PlayStation 4 God of War games recently got updates out of the blue, fueling speculation that they’ll be upgraded for the PlayStation 5 this fall.

Although it’s not completely confirmed, signs are pointing to both God of War and the PlayStation 4 remaster of God of War 3 getting PlayStation 5 enhancements. While Sony has affirmed that there will be PlayStation 4 games that can move onto PlayStation 5 and take advantage of that console’s increased power, they have not yet confirmed a full list of PlayStation 4 games that will make the jump. Third-party publishers have stated that games ranging from Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla to Cyberpunk 2077 will support players bringing their PS4 purchases over to PS5. A few games (mostly sports titles) require purchasing an Ultimate Edition for the privilege, and physical owners will have to keep their PS4 discs to keep playing.

Most of the games supporting PlayStation 5 upgrades are the same ones supporting Smart Delivery, Microsoft’s buzzword for free upgrades across generations. However, while Sony has been quiet about its own games supporting the feature, Microsoft has been outgoing in which of its games will get Xbox Series X optimization. Gears 5 was confirmed to get a huge update at the console launch earlier this week that proceeds new story DLC, and Halo: The Master Chief Collection will be supporting frame rates up to 120 FPS on the new machine.

While Sony has yet to reveal which PlayStation exclusives will get the primo treatment, a few recent patches seem to point gamers in one likely direction. Well-known modder Lance McDonald spotted updates to both God of War 3 Remastered and 2018’s God of War this past week. Both games haven’t been updated in years before this addition, suggesting that there could be preparations behind the scenes for a PlayStation 5 optimized upgrade for around the console’s launch. In the replies to the tweet, Lance also makes the valid point that the newest God of War already has an uncapped framerate, meaning that the game will likely hit 60 FPS even if the update doesn’t materialize.

God of War 3 Remastered and God of War (2018) both received updates in the last few days, for the first time in years. Both titles will likely benefit from PlayStation 5 boost mode in this case. I wonder if there’s anything else hidden inside…

God of War will be continuing onto the PlayStation 5 generation, with a new game set in the time of Ragnorok coming in 2021. With that in mind, it’s perhaps easy to guess which other PlayStation 4 games may be getting a similar treatment. Marvel’s Spider-Man is confirmed to be getting a remastered port, but it’s only available to purchasers of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales Ultimate Edition. However, no such edition is on the horizon for Horizon: Zero Dawn and its upcoming sequel could mean that the original gets a new coat of paint in the fall.

With the PlayStation 5 releasing in a little over two weeks, the time is right to get all the information into the public eye, including PS5 upgrades for games like God of War. Microsoft may not have brand new first-party games to release for their new machine, but they have been much more forthcoming about information regarding a player’s experience on day one. They also seem to be pushing hard on the idea of next-gen upgrades, and it’s fair to say that some developers may not have been so generous with them if not for the implementation of Smart Delivery.
