God of War How Kratos Leviathan Axe & Thors Hammer Are Related

In 2018’s God of War, protagonist Kratos’ Leviathan Axe shares many similarities with Thor’s legendary hammer, Mjolnir. As it turns out, the two weapons are actually very closely related in God of War’s version of Norse mythology.

Like Thor’s hammer, Kratos’ axe has the ability to return to its user’s hand when thrown. Likewise, both weapons are magically infused with a certain element. Mjolnir is famous for its ability to summon lightning strikes and thunderstorms powerful enough to take down the world’s strongest gods and giants. Likewise, the Leviathan Axe is imbued with frost powers, making it capable of summoning ice storms and freezing opponents solid.

The two weapons’ similarities are no coincidence. Over the course of their travels, Kratos and Atreus cross paths with a pair of dwarven twin smiths, Brok and Sindri, who upgrade their equipment at the cost of valuable materials. According to the God of War Wiki, the twins eventually reveal they are responsible for the creation of both Mjolnir and Leviathan. Brok and Sindri are proud of the creations, but they possess an attitude of regret and animosity towards Mjolnir for all the wanton destruction it has caused in the hands of Thor.

Who Made Kratos’ Leviathan Axe In God Of War

When Thor used Mjolnir to singlehandedly eliminate most of giant-kind, Brok and Sindri crafted Leviathan and gifted it to the last remaining giant, Laufey the Just. In order to create a weapon worthy of standing up to Mjolnir, the twins imbued Leviathan’s blade with the screams of 20 frost trolls. This gave the axe some extremely powerful frost powers. Unfortunately, Laufey never used Leviathan to avenge the giants, and she instead passed it on to others she deemed worthy.

This is how the axe ended up with Kratos. When Kratos and Atreus finally complete their long journey, they learn Kratos’ wife was actually Laufey. After meeting Kratos, she gave up her days of fighting and instead focused on her family. She also foresaw Kratos and Atreus would have a much greater role in fighting the Norse gods than she would, so she entrusted the pair with her axe when she finally died.

By the time Kratos and Atreus learn the truth, they have already attracted the ire of the Norse gods. They somehow managed to kill the unkillable god, Baldur, and it’s only a matter of time before his family comes to avenge him. In the final scene of God of War’s story, Atreus has a premonition, revealing Thor will soon come to visit them with the infamous Mjolnir in hand. In all likelihood, fans will finally get to see how Leviathan stacks up against its predecessor when the sequel, known for now as God of War: Ragnarok, finally releases in 2021.
