Godzilla 2014s Ancient Titan Skeleton Explained

What was the giant Titan skeleton shown at the beginning of 2014’s Godzilla? It was established in the first installment in the MonsterVerse that giant monsters called Titans have existed on Earth for thousands of years, and in the sequel, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, it was stated that the planet belonged to the Titans long before it ever belonged to the humans.

In the beginning of Godzilla, Dr. Serizawa (Ken Watanabe) and other Monarch scientists are seen walking through the skeleton of an ancient Titan found in the Philippines. Vivienne (Sally Hawkins) wonders if the skeleton is Godzilla’s, but Dr. Serizawa says that it’s much older than Godzilla. The species of this creature is never mentioned, and its exact age isn’t discussed. From what is shown of the fossilized monster, it appears that it has a bone structure similar to Godzilla, but not enough of it is seen to provide an accurate picture of what the Titan looked like when it still lived.

So what was this mysterious Titan? The credits of Godzilla provides an answer to this question. An image of Monarch’s file on the skeleton reveals that it is indeed the same species as Godzilla. This particular specimen has been named “Adam”. It would seem that he was related to Godzilla in some way, and may even be one of Godzilla’s ancestors. As for what happened to Adam, Godzilla suggests that he was killed by the M.U.T.O.s. This seemed likely at the time, considering that M.U.T.O. eggs were implanted in his body.

The Godzilla tie-in comic from 2019, Godzilla: Aftershock, explores this creature’s history even further. Though “Adam” is the name given to him by the Godzilla credits, Aftershock renames him “Dagon” and clears up the mystery of what happened to him. Aftershock confirms what was already suspected, which was that a M.U.T.O caused his death. Dagon battled the M.U.T.O. Prime and was infected with its eggs. He killed the creature, but having the M.U.T.O eggs inside of him led to his own demise as well.

How closely Dagon – or Adam – is related to Godzilla hasn’t been revealed, but it’s possible that the MonsterVerse could drop more details about his past. The redacted text in the Godzilla: King of the Monsters credits tells the story of a human-Titan war, and Adam may have been a part of it. Godzilla vs. Kong, being a movie that will dive deep into the origin and history of the Titans, is the perfect opportunity for Adam to be explored further. Adam’s skeleton could also play a critical role in the story itself, due to the inclusion of Mechagodzilla; the ancient skeleton could be the key element needed to build Mechagodzilla. If so, the opening scene of Godzilla could have more importance to the future of the MonsterVerse than anyone ever thought.
