Godzilla 3 Can Fulfill GvKs Promised Monster War (Which Didnt Happen)

The MonsterVerse movie Godzilla 3 can do what Godzilla vs. Kong didn’t by sending the Titans to war. Plot descriptions and marketing for the movie teased a “monster war” happening in Godzilla vs. Kong. However, this doesn’t really feel like an accurate account of the story, considering that Godzilla vs. Kong’s “war” was only between two Titans.

Thanks to the mass awakening caused by Ghidorah and the Orca in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Legendary’s MonsterVerse is loaded with Titans. That being said, only three monsters received major roles in Godzilla vs. Kong. The conflict in the movie revolved mostly around Godzilla, Kong, and the King of the Monsters’ robotic counterpart, Mechagodzilla. The rest of the Titans, which included Rodan, Behemoth, Scylla, Methuselah, and a third MUTO, were only seen in the movie’s opening credits. All of them were listed as “Defeated”, which right away gave viewers the impression that they were off the table for the fight between the two rival alphas.

None of the Titans introduced in King of the Monsters took part in the action in Godzilla vs. Kong, but that doesn’t mean they won’t return. There’s a chance that Godzilla 3 will find room for them – and more. If Legendary does give the Japanese pop culture icon a third solo movie, it would have a chance to not only bring back Rodan and company but also introduce some original Titans of its own and MonsterVerse adaptations of old favorites from Toho’s library. All of these things happening in one movie is possible, especially if Godzilla 3 treats audiences to a true monster war.

How Godzilla vs Kong Set Up A Monster War (& Why It Didn’t Deliver)

Godzilla vs. Kong set up a monster war, but ultimately didn’t go in that direction. According to Rebecca Hall’s Ilene Andrews, the ancestors of Godzilla and Kong were involved in a “Titan War” thousands of years ago. The battle apparently started in the hidden Hollow Earth world, and seemingly ended with Kong’s species relocating to Skull Island. Not much is known about what took place, but the implication is that both sides had numerous participants. Also, it looks like Titans unrelated to Godzilla and Kong’s respective races had roles to play as well, as old cave paintings point toward Mothra and the Skullcrawlers being present in some capacity.

Since Godzilla just became the alpha of the Titans, it would have worked story-wise for Godzilla to bring his new minions along with him for the fight with Kong, but for a number of reasons, it was not to be. First of all, one obstacle to this happening would have been Kong’s loner status. A monster war in Godzilla vs. Kong would have been lopsided for sure. King of the Monsters gave Godzilla an army, but the MonsterVerse has provided no setup for Kong to have one of his own. In addition to that, there’s the matter of the film’s focus. Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard noted in earlier interviews that there wasn’t a place for Toho monsters like Rodan and Anguirus, so it’s likely that this notion would also apply to all the other missing Titans. After all, Godzilla vs. Kong was all about the conflict between the two main players, hence the title. So even though a “monster war” was promised, it wouldn’t have fit in with the’s movie’s basic premise.

Why Godzilla 3 Needs Multiple Villains

The concept could be more feasible as the plot of Godzilla 3, which doesn’t need to centralize two monsters. Since a third installment in Godzilla’s MonsterVerse series hasn’t been announced, there’s no solid evidence of which villain Legendary will chose to appear opposite Godzilla (if the movie happens at all). Among the most viable options are the monsters Biollante (set up with an Easter egg), Destoroyah, and Gigan, but it’s difficult to say which one Legendary may be leaning toward for his opponent, or if it’ll make a new Titan instead.

Perhaps the best path for Godzilla 3 to take is for is to pick more than one. Looking at what the MonsterVerse has already done, that’s actually better than a singular foe. Through his fights with the MUTOs, Ghidorah, and Kong, Godzilla has already established himself as the apex predator of the Earth’s entire ecosystem and the most powerful force on the planet. And while his robotic adversary did beat him, it’s already been made clear that Godzilla could have defeated Mechagodzilla alone had he not been weakened. All things considered, Godzilla doesn’t need to prove himself again, nor should it introduce a Titan that Godzilla can’t beat. Godzilla being the strongest of them all is part of his character in the MonsterVerse, and that should never be undermined.

How would the MonsterVerse approach the implementation of multiple villains in Godzilla 3? If it doesn’t want to diminish Biollante and Destoroyah by pairing them with each other, it could use only one and have them ally with minor antagonists from Toho’s Godzilla movies. For example, Godzilla could find himself at odds with Gigan, whose lackeys may include monsters such as Battra, Ebirah, Megalon, or Megaguirus.

A Modern Titan War Is The Best Use of The MonsterVerse’s Potential

A modern-day Titan War playing out in Godzilla 3 would be unique to anything else the MonsterVerse (or Toho) has ever done. The idea of monsters essentially forming armies and going to war with each other in the MonsterVerse has been made possible by both Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs. Kong. The first sign that it could happen was when Ghidorah secured the alpha position by beating Rodan. Afterward, several Titans answered his call and began to do his bidding. Then, Godzilla vs. Kong dove into the concept a bit more by discussing a previous Titan War. It occurring off-screen in the distant past lent it a mysterious feel that further adds to the appeal of one unfolding in the present, with Godzilla’s Titans going head-to-head with an evil alpha and all his underlings. It’d also be an excellent opportunity to see Godzilla join forces with old allies like Anguirus and Rodan. It could be a much more exciting take on Destroy All Monsters, which saw Godzilla and almost a dozen other kaiju fight Ghidorah. In this version of the story, the villain could actually stand a chance at winning by having his own helpers.

The precedent for monster wars set by Godzilla vs. Kong and how the hierarchy of the Titans works make this a real and intriguing possibility for the future, specifically Godzilla 3. It’d certainly be the best use of the MonsterVerse’s potential.
