Godzilla King of the Monsters New Titans Behemoth Explained

New Titans are introduced to Legendary’s MonsterVerse in Godzilla: King of the Monsters, one of which is Behemoth, a monster based on a beast from the Bible. Behemoth is just one of 17 Titans who roam the Earth in the MonsterVerse. Only some of them were included in King of the Monsters. Four of them took center stage while a handful more appeared only briefly.

All of the kaiju action in Godzilla: King of the Monsters came from Godzilla himself, Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah, as the four Titans were thrust into a conflict that endangered the entire planet. The actions of eco-terrorists nearly brought the world to its knees when King Ghidorah was awoken from his frozen slumber. After three brutal battles, Godzilla managed to defeat Ghidorah and prove to the other Titans that he – and not Ghidorah – was the true King of the Monsters. The film ended with Rodan and the other Titans gathering around Godzilla and bowing down to the new alpha.

One of those Titans was Behemoth (Titanus Behemoth), a hairy creature with the arms and body of a ground sloth and the tusks of a woolly mammoth. Behemoth is shown to be slow-moving but powerful. In one scene, he effortlessly demolishes a building by swinging his tusks. He can also attack with his claws. In the Godzilla: King of the Monsters credits, it’s revealed that Behemoth is good for the environment. His waste revitalized the Amazon rainforest.

The Titan was dwelling in a cave in Brazil where Monarch had one of their outposts. The indigenous people of the region call him “Mapinguary”, a mythical giant sloth said to have lived in the Amazon rainforest. This links Behemoth with not one but two famous creatures. Another thing that’s noteworthy about Behemoth is that he and King Kong share the distinction of being the only Titans who are mammals in the MonsterVerse (so far).

Godzilla: King of the Monsters director Mike Dougherty has confirmed that Behemoth comes from the Bible (via Bloody Disgusting). A creature called “Behemoth” is described by Job in the Old Testament. The novelization of the movie provides further evidence that Behemoth could really be the Biblical beast. It’s stated that Behemoth is depicted in cave paintings that are at least 12,000 years old. Behemoth has likely endured much in his long life, and the MonsterVerse may have more in store for him at some point down the line. Behemoth could return as one of Godzilla’s minions in Godzilla vs. Kong.
