Godzilla King of the Monsters Trailer Reveals TWO More Titans

Godzilla: King of the Monsters will feature Rodan, Mothra, and King Ghidorah – but the latest trailer appears to show two more mystery Titans emerging from the Earth. Directed by Michael Dougherty, King of the Monsters is the sequel to 2014’s Godzilla and is set in the “MonsterVerse,” a cinematic universe that also includes Kong: Skull Island. In the MonsterVerse, the Earth was once ruled by giant creatures called Titans, who were worshipped and feared by earlier civilizations, and are now re-emerging from their dormant states to wreak havoc.

In Godzilla, the titular giant lizard battled against two such Titans, referred to as MUTOs (Massive Unidentified Terrestrial Organisms), who were a male and female of the same species. Godzilla ultimately defeated both of them, and then retreated into the ocean, where he has been lurking ever since. However, in King of the Monsters even more Titans will wake up. We already know about the benevolent Mothra, the “Fire Demon” Rodan, and the terrifying 500 foot tall three-headed dragon King Ghidorah – but who are the two other Titans in King of the Monsters’ latest trailer?

The Monster Under The Mountain

Godzilla King of the Monsters Trailer Reveals TWO More Titans

On Monarch Sciences’ website there is a world map of Monarch facilities, with three of the facilities (those containing Rodan, Mothra, and Ghidorah) offering extra details on their resident monsters. However, there are also more than a dozen other facilities listed as “Classified,” including several in the United States, two in Europe, and one in the Pacific Ocean (this is actually King Kong’s home, Skull Island). Presumably most if not all of these facilities contains a Titan, and it looks like at some point in the movie their contents will become violently unclassified.

At around the 0:58 mark in the new Godzilla: King of the Monsters trailer, a Titan can be seen emerging from underneath a mountain with houses at the foot of it. The Titan appears to have some kind of shell that has formed the base of the mountain, with trees growing on its back. It’s possible that this is some version of Anguiris, a monster from Toho’s kaiju films, who is similar in design to an Ankylosaurus and has a hard, spiky shell on its back.

The Crab-Legged Monster

The second mystery monster in the King of the Monsters trailer appears at the 0:46, breaking out from underneath an oil field. In the MonsterVerse, some believe that the Titans are re-emerging to rid the Earth of its human “infection,” due to humans damaging the Earth through pollution and drilling for resources, and a Titan bursting out of the ground to destroy an oil field certainly fits that that theory. This Titan has curving crab-like legs with a hard shell, so this could be Kumonga, a Titan that resembles a giant spider and has similar legs that curve into sharp, stabbing points.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters already has to juggle four famous Titans and a host of human characters, so it’s unlikely that these additional monsters will actually fully enter the fray. It’s more likely that these two clips are from the end of the movie, with the rest of the Titans around the world emerging for a bombastic cliffhanger ending. The official synopsis for Godzilla vs. Kong, the sequel to King of the Monsters, begins, “In a time when monsters walk the Earth” – implying that Godzilla and Kong won’t be the only giants around. So, while these mystery Titans may not get much screen time in King of the Monsters, they could well play an important role in the sequel.
