Godzilla vs Kong Can Have Toho’s Most Iconic Monster Team Up

With Godzilla and Rodan, Godzilla vs. Kong can introduce to the MonsterVerse Toho’s most iconic giant monster team-up. A role for Rodan in the next MonsterVerse installment hasn’t been confirmed, but is certainly possible, thanks to the ending of Godzilla: King of the Monsters.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters added three additional Toho kaiju to Legendary’s MonsterVerse: King Ghidorah, Rodan, and Mothra. Rodan is a Pteranadon-like creature who lives in a volcano and flies at destructive, supersonic speeds. Rodan, who is one of Toho’s most popular monsters, has appeared in numerous live-action films – starting with his own solo film, Rodan, in 1955. Rodan also played prominent roles in some of Toho’s Godzilla movies from the 1960s, and more. Over the years, Rodan has clashed with Godzilla, King Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters reimagined Rodan for the MonsterVerse with a fiery upgrade and an update to his design to make him look more imposing. In the movie, Rodan was introduced as Titanus Rodan, one of the 17 Titans hidden in the MonsterVerse. After being awakened by the Orca, Rodan emerged as a dangerous force who acted as a minion of Ghidorah. Godzilla vs. Kong, however, could take Rodan in a different direction by accurately adapting his relationship with Godzilla from the Toho movies.

Godzilla and Rodan Are Allies in Toho’s Movies

Godzilla has fought alongside multiple kaiju in Toho’s movies, including Rodan, Mothra, Anguirus, King Caesar, and Jet Jaguar. Out of all of them, Rodan is Godzilla’s most important ally. Godzilla and Anguirus were a duo only one time in Godzilla vs. Gigan, and prior to King of the Monsters, the only time where Mothra was Godzilla’s main ally was in 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars. Rodan, on the other hand, is Godzilla’s most reliable partner in combat. Godzilla and Rodan were portrayed as a powerful duo in Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster and The Invasion of Astro-Monster.

The two first met in Ghidorah, The Three-Headed Monster, when Godzilla and Rodan had a humorous but violent encounter. Their fight was interrupted by Mothra, who tried to convince the pair to stop their fight and save the humans from King Ghidorah. Godzilla swore at Mothra and refused to help, but eventually both Godzilla and Rodan agreed to a team-up. Mothra, who was still in her larval form, was only able to provide a small amount of assistance, forcing Godzilla and Rodan to do most of the fighting. Since the two of them were credited with beating Ghidorah, they were chosen to do it again in the direct sequel, Invasion of Astro-Monster, which sent the duo to a distant planet.

When fighting together, Godzilla and Rodan knew how to be a team. Godzilla was devastating in close combat, and Rodan was adept at high-speed attacks and dropping boulders from the sky. Their teamwork allowed them to easily overcome Ghidorah in both fights. Rodan was also one of the monsters who contributed the most to the final battle with Ghidorah in Destroy All Monsters. Rodan returned in 1993’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II and was instrumental in Godzilla’s victory over Mechagodzilla and the humans. Rodan poured the rest of his life-force into Godzilla so that he would have the strength to defeat Mechagodzilla. Rodan’s sacrifice is what allowed Godzilla to take down Mechagodzilla and save his son.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters Sets Up Rodan As An Ally

Of the three Toho kaiju who joined the MonsterVerse in King of the Monsters, only Rodan survived the events of the movie. Godzilla vs. Kong has a way to bring back Mothra, and Ghidorah could be revived by having him rebuilt as Mecha-King Ghidorah, but clearly the character with the easiest path to another MonsterVerse appearance is Rodan. In the final battle of King of the Monsters, Rodan stopped Mothra from helping Godzilla against Ghidorah, and the two engaged in a fierce battle. It ended with Rodan being badly injured by Mothra’s stinger. Even though it looked like Rodan might die from his wounds, his survival was confirmed when he was shown standing in front of a victorious Godzilla. In bowing down to Godzilla as a showing of respect, Rodan accepted Godzilla as the alpha. Rodan is now one of several Titans who must obey Godzilla’s every command.

Up until that last scene in the movie Godzilla and Rodan had no interaction with each other, but their relationship will be fundamentally different if and when Rodan returns to the big screen. Godzilla: King of the Monsters sets up Rodan as a future ally. Since Rodan is one of Godzilla’s new minions, Godzilla’s enemies are now Rodan’s enemies. So unless Godzilla somehow loses his position as King of the Monsters, it’s expected that Rodan would fight on Godzilla’s side.

Godzilla And Rodan Can Team-Up in Godzilla vs. Kong

What will Rodan’s role be if he comes back for Godzilla vs. Kong? Godzilla may now have a small army of Titans at his command, but that doesn’t mean he’ll be leading them everywhere he goes. It’s more likely that Godzilla will either travel alone or primarily stick with one Titan ally. That Titan has a strong chance of being Rodan, based on his popularity and the history of their relationship in Toho’s movies. Their friendly relationship from the classic Godzilla movies was nonexistent in King of the Monsters, but the movie’s ending makes it possible for it to be adapted properly in Godzilla vs. Kong.

If Godzilla’s journey takes him to Skull Island, Rodan could go along for the journey, but what would that mean for the fight with Kong? Godzilla vs. Kong is sure to feature an epic one-on-one showdown between Godzilla and Kong, so something would have to happen to keep Rodan from getting in the way. The movie can keep Rodan from being a problem by either giving him a foe of his own to fight, or having him meet a tragic end prior to Godzilla’s showdown with Kong. Rodan could die in a fight with Mechagodzilla or even Kong himself. If Kong kills Godzilla’s closest ally, that alone could prompt Godzilla to fight with Kong. Regardless of what Godzilla vs. Kong does with the character, the movie serves as a perfect opportunity for Toho’s most iconic monster duo to get some much-deserved screen time in the MonsterVerse.
