Ray Liotta hardly ever strays from the tough-guy persona that made him a star and his next project will be no different. He is joining the cast of The Many Saints of Newark, a Sopranos prequel movie going into production this spring.
David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos, is writing the movie, set in 1960s New Jersey, with Lawrence Konner. It tells the story of a young Tony Soprano (Michael Gandolfini) during the Newark riots pitting Italian-American gangsters against African-American gangsters.

“I am thrilled to be working with David Chase and Alan Taylor on The Many Saints of Newark,” Liotta told Deadline. “David’s talent is unmatched and the directing of Alan Taylor makes this even more exciting. I respect them both immensely and look forward to making this special project with New Line.”
Liotta is perfect casting, being from Newark and growing up during that time, along with his role as Henry Hill in Goodfellas. Many cast members from the Scorsese classic starred on The Sopranos over the years, including Michael Imperioli, Lorraine Bracco, Frank Vincent and Tony Sirico to name a few. In total, around 27 actors from Goodfellas appeared on The Sopranos.
Details on The Many Saints of Newark are still under wraps, but some well-known Sopranos characters are reported to return. Chase and Konner are producing, with Nicole Lambert and Marcus Viscidi executive producing for Chase Films.

One of the most decorated TV shows of all times, Sopranos ran for six seasons on HBO, winning 21 Primetime Emmys and five Golden Globes. Tony Soprano was the role that brought the late James Gandolfini to stardom.
Beyond Goodfellas, Ray Liotta is known for roles in Field of Dreams, Cop Land, Unlawful Entry, and offbeat entries such as Muppets Most Wanted. He also signed on to be in Charlie Day’s first feature film, El Tonto.
