Google Pixel 5 Design Features & Specs Rumor & Leak Roundup

The Google Pixel 5 is coming soon and it’s time to go through the leaks and rumors to get an idea of what can be expected. Although none of the information can be taken as confirmed before it is announced, there have been plenty of rumors and leaks recently surrounding the latest smartphone from the search giant, and developer of the Android operating system.

In the last few years, Google started making a budget version of its flagship smartphone. The Pixel 3a and 4a have many of the features of the Pixel 3 and 4, respectively, but with a lesser build quality. For example, plastic backs instead of glass and metal. While the Pixel 4 had a secondary rear telephoto camera, the Pixel 4a offered only the single wide-angle. The Pixel 4 also had an interesting, but mostly unused, touchless interaction feature, called Soli. That, and other costly additions were excluded from the lower cost Pixel 4a. By making a low cost version, more users were introduced to the awesome artificial intelligence power of Google’s camera app, Lens and Assistant features. Google teased the Pixel 5 as far back as August with an edge photo of two smartphones, one larger, with a big ‘5’ to the left and a big ‘G’ to the right. The larger of the two appears to match the look of the Pixel 4a. Google also gave a starting price of $499, which is likely referring to the 5G version of Pixel 4a. Google gave no hint of the Pixel 5 pricing.

The Pixel 5 is expected to be properly unveiled during Google’s LaunchInNight event that takes place on September 30, at 11 am PT. There is good evidence that Google’s Pixel 5 may not be a traditional flagship and while that might be disappointing to some, leaks have indicated it won’t be powered by Qualcomm’s main and most powerful SoC. The basis for this idea is some detective work by 9To5Google after scanning code from Google’s camera app. The outlet claims to have gleaned from the code that the Pixel 5 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, rather than the 865 or 865+ found in other top-tier Android smartphones. The same article states the Google Camera app code reveals that the Pixel 5 will still have a telephoto camera as its second camera.

Others dispute this, however, suggesting Google will opt for an ultra-wide angle camera that has been adopted by many smartphone manufacturers recently. While telephoto is nice, the limited range of a two or three times zoom may not be worth the effort, when ultra-wide has a much more dramatic effect on photos and an almost magical effect on videos. Regardless, Google offers among the best digital effects ever seen with its super-resolution zoom. For example, the Pixel 4a using two times digital zoom often captures a better photo than competing smartphones that have an actual telephoto lens camera.

Many More Pixel 5 Specs Revealed

Several photos of what appears to be the Pixel 5 were leaked by Jose Antonio Ponton via Twitter and the photos align with previous rumors that there are two rear cameras and a hole-punch selfie camera. The photos show a fingerprint reader on the back, suggesting Google may either add that as an option or may remove its facial recognition feature. The biggest leak to date was very recently shared by WinFuture and provided nearly every specification of the Google Pixel 5. For example, it reveals the inclusion of the 765G processor, a 6-inch display with a 19.5:9 ratio and thin bezels. The rear cameras are said to include the familiar 12.2-megapixel at f/1.7 and a secondary 107-degree wide-angle camera at 16 megapixels and F/2.2 aperture. It makes sense that the new Google phone would join the popular wide-angle trend and the main camera is claimed to be capable of shooting 4K resolution video at 60 frames per second, a welcome addition. Unfortunately, the WinFuture report says the selfie camera is a mere 8-megapixel sensor at F/2.0 and with fixed focus. It’s strange that Google may continue to let the front-facing camera lag the competition.

Pricing for the Pixel 5 is still unknown, but will hopefully be lower than flagship pricing, given the somewhat mid-range specs. At least the 4,080 mAh battery is a third larger than the Pixel 4. Build quality is expected to be good with Gorilla Glass and OLED, but internals are not terribly impressive if the leaks and rumors are true. That said, Google does include a custom chip in its phones, the Pixel Neural Core, and that could make a difference. An advanced chip integrated with Google’s artificial intelligence expertise has had remarkable results in the past and no doubt more wizardry will be shown at the official announcement, which is set for September 30. It will be interesting to see which direction the search engine and cloud computing giant goes with its new smartphone. Will there be a new type of flagship that has amazing AI power that exceeds its specifications? Or will the Google Pixel 5 be a low cost, but high quality mid-range phone?
