Google is bringing much-needed simplification to its routers. Beginning this May, users of the Google Wifi app will be transitioned to Google Home.

In an effort to streamline all of its smart home devices, Google is preparing to shut down its long-running Google Wifi app and transition all of its users to the Google Home one. The Google Wifi router first launched in December 2016, offering a mesh Wi-Fi solution, smart capabilities, and easy set up/management through the Google Wifi companion app. This was followed up with the even smarter and faster Nest Wifi in 2019, and then in late 2020, Google re-released the Google Wifi as a cheaper alternative to it.
As if the hardware lineup hasn’t been confusing enough, the software side of things isn’t much better. With the release of the Nest Wifi, Google added Wi-Fi controls in the Google Home app so that the routers could be managed alongside all of the other smart devices someone has. However, the old Google Wifi app has still lived on as the primary way for people with the older Google Wifi routers to control their home network. Thankfully, Google is now looking to simplify things.
Speaking to CNET, Google has confirmed that it’ll be shutting down the Google Wifi companion app later this year and transition its users to Google Home. According to a spokesperson from the company, “We want to make it easier to manage all of your devices in one place, so we’ve migrated Wi-Fi functionality into the Google Home app. Nest Wifi has always been set up in the Google Home app, so we’re now bringing this same functionality to existing Google Wifi users.” In addition to old Google Wifi routers, this change also applies to anyone still using Google’s OnHub routers.
How Google Wifi Users Can Switch To The Google Home App
To ensure the change is as painless as possible, Google is running the transition through two stages. As of May 25, users will only be able to set up a new router or add one to an existing network through the Google Home app. The Google Wifi app will still be used for managing a network that’s already established, but anything to do with new hardware will take place in Google Home. The next step happens in July, when Google will officially sunset the Google Wifi application and inform users that they need to start using Google Home.
Thankfully, Google has made the actual transition pretty simple. After downloading and setting up the Google Home app, users can open it and tap the ‘+’ icon in the upper-left corner of their screen. There will then be an option called ‘Import Google Wifi Network,’ and after tapping that, users will be guided through everything step-by-step.
While longtime Google Wifi users may be irritated about having to switch to a different app to manage their network, everything about this just makes sense. There’s no need for Google to manage two applications for its family of routers, especially given that the Google Home app is already a hub for all of Google’s other smart devices.
