Google Wifi & Nest Wifi Can Now Focus Bandwidth On Zoom Calls

Google Wifi and Nest Wifi are receiving an update that lets users redirect bandwidth priority straight to their Zoom calls as and when needed. The recent update also comes with a handful of changes and improvements. Google continues to provide internet users with various quality options that allows them to be more economical with their bandwidth expenditure.

The tech giant has been doing its part in combating congested internet traffic during the pandemic by constantly improving the software of its products via regular updates. Both the Google Wifi and Nest Wifi had already received two prior internet speed optimization updates within this year alone. Also earlier this year, Google announced that it will be bringing Zoom calls to its smart displays, and it appears that the company is now turning its attention to fine-tuning conference-call quality.

According to the changelog, the Google Wifi and Nest Wifi November update lets devices automatically detect video conferencing traffic and optimizes performance, if users set it as a “preferred activity.” Although, the only supported video-conferencing platforms affected by the update at the moment are Google Meet and Zoom. Aside from a couple of general security and performance improvements, the update also provides various connectivity optimizations and certain additional input from the Google Home app Feed. For example, the Feed will now show issues stemming from wrong passwords, poor coverage, and/or weak WAN connection, among others.

What The Wi-Fi Update Means For Users

The major Nest outage that recently affected device owners highlights the importance of why the company constantly needs to make software refinements to its products. With the latest update, the company takes a step closer to providing a more reliable service to Google Wifi and Nest Wifi users working from home. Furthermore, having the option to redirect bandwidth priority to conference calls is likely to be an even bigger deal in households where many members are sharing the same connection.

Those engaging in important conference calls will now suffer less from interference due to another housemate’s bandwidth-hungry leisurely activity. However, the longer lockdown restrictions drag on, the more dependent people will become on the internet, which is likely to further lead to an ever-increasing amount of traffic. It’s a recurring problem that will undoubtedly challenge internet connection reliability as the year progresses. That said, it doesn’t seem like the tech giant is slowing down in finding solutions to bandwidth spikes caused by the pandemic either. With Google continually encouraging its employees to work from home, it’s to be expected that, connection-related updates like this one, will also be on the increase in the future.
