In the latest installment in the Gorillaz audiovisual project Song Machine, the virtual band members team up with fellow artist Beck in a music video for “Valley of the Pagans” – all bizarrely set in Grand Theft Auto 5’s Los Santos. While Gorillaz already exist in the world of GTA 5 via the group’s iconic hit “Feel Good Inc.” playing on the game’s fictional radio station Non Stop Pop FM, this is the first time the animated group has made an appearance inside the popular crime simulator.

Gorillaz is a popular virtual band based out of Britain created in 2001, consisting of fictional members 2D, Noodle, Murdoc, and Russel (all created by the artistic duo of Damon Albarn and Jamie Hewlett). Once the lead vocalist of the 90s’ rock band Blur, Damon Albarn is the music producer and the vocalist behind 2D. Jamie Hewlett, otherwise known as the creator of the Tank Girl comics, is the artist behind the visuals and character design of the Gorillaz. Having released seven studio albums, the Gorillaz are now working on their monthly audiovisual project Song Machine.

Episode eight of Song Machine is titled “Valley of the Pagans” and features renowned genre-bender Beck. During the video, the Gorillaz enter a portal in their garage that transports them to Grand Theft Auto 5’s Los Santos. The majority of the video is seemingly filmed using the game’s cinematic camera mode as the virtual band members haphazardly cruise around the island. Every so often the camera will switch to a view inside the car to show Russel, Murdoc, and 2D reacting to Noodle’s reckless driving. Of course, Beck is also in the video and appears on the screen of the “player’s” iFruit phone.

Over the past 19 years, Gorillaz has continued to grown with its fanbase. Unlike other virtual stars like Hatsune Miku, Noodle isn’t still the same kid she was in “19-2000”. Something else unique about the Gorillaz is how their music videos tend to follow an overarching storyline – or at least they once did. Up until the start of Music Machine, the Gorillaz’s journey to where they are today could be followed by watching their videos in chronological order. Now, every episode of Music Machine is its own adventure contained in a single episode.

While the Gorillaz most certainly visited Los Santos, it’s hard to say that their trip to GTA 5 will have any implications on their overall journey. At most, it feels like this episode was more of a musical advertisement for Grand Theft Auto 5 as it had a severe lack of Jamie Hewlett’s art. This isn’t the first time this year that GTA has gotten mixed in the world of music videos, but the Gorillaz’s music video had more of an impact on Los Santos than The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” video.
