Every character in the Gossip Girl reboot is definitely scrambling to reach the top of the social ladder. But who ranks the highest in the group?

The arrival of the new Gossip Girl series has taken the world by storm, and the new gang on the Met steps has managed to pique the interest of fans of the original show as well. Even though the new crowd at Constance Billard and St. Jude’s is less problematic than the original group and a lot more self-aware and conscious of their privilege, there is still a very defined social structure that shines through in the first episode of the show itself.
What’s slightly different this time around is that the faculty at the prestigious private school has a big part to play in the lives of Julien, Zoya, Obie, Max, Audrey, Monet, Luna, and Aki. However, every character in the show is definitely scrambling to reach the top of the social ladder, even more so as this avatar of Gossip Girl is set in the modern age of social media.
9 Kate Keller
The balance of power in Constance Billard tips unfairly towards its wealthy students, and if there is one teacher who is not having it, it’s Kate. Still young enough to be familiar with social media, she mourns the lack of respect that she and her peers are shown by students, which is why she restarts as Gossip Girl in an attempt to straighten the scale.
It is clear, however, that Kate is bottom rung in the social hierarchy of the Upper East Side, despite her stirring up trouble. A working-class citizen can’t be expected to fare well against the power of money, but this could change in upcoming episodes.
8 Luna La
While it’s obvious that Julien’s stylist is also a product of generational wealth, since she attends the same school as the influencer, she is a few notches lower than JC’s other friends since she does work for her. While the others in the friend group hang out with each other because they want to, there is an element of servitude when it comes to Luna.
In fact, she is reminiscent of Blair Waldorf’s infamous minions, who carry out all of her dirty work on demand but with a bit more personality and status.
7 Monet De Haan
Julien’s social media manager and friend, Monet de Haan is just a step higher than Luna because a lot of what Julien says and does goes through Monet. She approves the curation of Julien’s online persona, and sometimes her real-life actions too, but this doesn’t change that her dynamic with Julien’s is worker first, then friend.
Monet is a wealthy kid who has more privilege and status than almost anyone, but within her own elite ecosystem, she ranks lower on the list.
6 Akeno ‘Aki’ Menzies
Not a lot has been revealed about the pink-haired Aki on the show yet, except for his interests. He is a lover of cinema and makes several references to films like Seven Samurai and filmmakers like Gaspar Noé in casual conversation.
Given that his closest friends are Manhattan’s richest, and that he is in a long-term relationship with Audrey who is best friends with Julien, it’s not hard to guess that he’s moderately high on the social scale. He likes to keep a low profile in general and not “stick out,” but his place in the group is cemented.
5 Audrey Hope
Everything about Audrey is seemingly perfect: her sense of style, her poise, her support of her friends, and her relationship. She is extremely close to Julien and tends to be protective of her and their friend group. While not a lot is known about her background, her home is shown in the first episode, and it is as luxurious as one could expect it to be.
She pushes herself to be better and achieve more, and she’s perhaps Julien’s most trusted confidante. Audrey rules the Upper Eastside, along with her best friend.
4 Max Wolfe
Flirtatious Max is definitely the wolf of the group, and entirely without the sheep’s clothing. He is openly flirtatious, indulges in drink and drugs unabashedly, and wears his sexuality on his sleeve. He is the billionaire son of billionaire parents, and his lifestyle is proof of the same.
The casanova of the group is clearly well-loved not only in his inner circle but also outside, by all genders. He is influential in his own stead, and unbothered by most other entities, which can be seen when he blocks Gossip Girl in the first blast that she sends out.
3 Otto ‘Obie’ Bergmann IV
Perhaps the richest boy at St. Jude’s, Obie recognizes his privilege more than any other student, and definitely more than his friends. He understands that his family’s business puts marginalized communities on the streets, and tries to make up for this by actively protesting against his own family’s projects.
Not only his wealth, but his romance with Julien firmly puts him in the top three of the Upper East Side. His supposed romance with Zoya does lose him some fans, although she does seem to be his soulmate, but he will always be hot property in Manhattan.
2 Zoya Lott
Surprisingly, ordinary citizen Zoya, with no trust fund or special riches, figures pretty high up in the social department, but being the half-sister of the most influential young person in town has its benefits. She came to Constance at Julien’s insistence but stays to prove herself better than her.
Gossip Girl unwittingly ricocheted 14-year-old Zoya from the bottom to the top with the invented rivalry between both the siblings and Luna and Monet’s meddling contributed to her meteoric rise on the scene too. Being linked with Obie in her first few days and taking Julien on head-on makes her a girl to watch out for.
1 Julien Calloway
It is no secret that Julien holds the keys to the kingdom of the Upper East Side. She’s the daughter of a big record producer, and her content on Instagram brought her immense fame, influence, power, and money, on her own terms too. She models for the biggest designers, regularly appears on front pages, and was dating the richest boy in school.
She is a celebrity with her own manager and stylist, and she effortlessly rules Constance through her clout. Everybody wants to be seen with her or be her, which makes her the “It Girl” of the city.
