Gotham Fish Mooney Will Not Return in Season 4

Introduced as an early boss of Penguin, Mooney is a club owner and key figure in Gotham’s criminal underworld at the outset, before transforming into a rogue super villain in later seasons. Impressively, Fish has already cheated death once thanks to the sinister machinations of Hugo Strange, who reincarnated the villain after her death at the hands of the Penguin. However, the character had a further brush with the grim reaper and Fish’s latest demise came at the hands of a raged-out Jim Gordon who inadvertently stabbed her while on a rampage.

According to Gotham executive producer John Stephen, the character of Fish Mooney is now unequivocally dead. Speaking with ComicBook, Stephen was asked whether Fish’s most recent death was her final bow and the producer replied:

“I’m afraid that’s it. Now, that one [death scene] was it. At a certain point, you gotta say ‘Definitely.’ People die at a certain point, and that’s the second or third time they die [in Gotham].”

With Stephen’s comments not even leaving the door slightly ajar for a potential return, it can be said with certainty that Fish Mooney’s – and therefore Jada Pinkett Smith’s – time on Gotham has come to a close, marking the departure of one of the show’s original figures. Mooney’s absence in season four is arguably a decision made out of necessity due to the glut of villains set to appear in the upcoming run of episodes. With Scarecrow, Solomon Grundy and Professor Pyg joining the likes of Ra’s al Ghul, The Riddler, Penguin, Catwoman, Poison Ivy and more, Gotham season four is certainly not found wanting for baddies.

Furthermore, Fish is perhaps one of Gotham’s least popular characters as far as fan reaction is concerned. Although this probably has more to do with her status as an original creation rather than Smith’s performance, Gotham’s audience never fully embraced the character and therefore bringing Fish Mooney’s story to a close in favor of introducing more recognizable faces makes complete sense.

Craig first began contributing to Screen Rant in 2016, several years after graduating college, and has been ranting ever since, mostly to himself in a darkened room. Having previously written for various sports and music outlets, Craig’s interest soon turned to TV and film, where a steady upbringing of science fiction and comic books finally came into its own. Craig has previously been published on sites such as Den of Geek, and after many coffee-drenched hours hunched over a laptop, part-time evening work eventually turned into a full-time career covering everything from the zombie apocalypse to the Starship Enterprise via the TARDIS. Since joining the Screen Rant fold, Craig has been involved in breaking news stories and mildly controversial ranking lists, but now works predominantly as a features writer. Jim Carrey is Craig’s top acting pick and favorite topics include superheroes, anime and the unrecognized genius of the High School Musical trilogy.
