Gotham Knights Characters Will Have Their Own Unique Upgrade Trees

A recent interview has revealed that Gotham Knights will support distinct skill trees and gadgets for each of the four playable characters. Gotham Knights is a four-player co-op game that sees players teaming up to clean the streets of Gotham after the alleged death of Batman. It was revealed this weekend at the online DC FanDome event and is currently targeting a 2021 release.

Gotham Knights turned a lot of heads even before it was announced. Batman fans were tantalized in the days leading up to the reveal with mysterious teasers hinting at the involvement of the sinister Court of Owls, a frightful underground society that controls the city of Gotham from behind the scenes. The announcement trailer confirmed these hints, as well as identifying the game as a multiplayer title. Players will take control of either Bat Girl, Robin, Nightwing, or Red Hood and terrorize Gotham’s criminal underbelly in Batman’s stead, doing battle with enemies like Mr. Freeze and the Court of Owls along the way.

In an interview with GamesRadar, creative director Patrick Redding has revealed a few more details about Gotham Knights. According to Redding, each of the four main characters will have their own distinct means of progressing as characters during the game. Each of the vigilantes has their own upgrade paths and gear sets which sets them apart from each other and makes them feel and play completely different. Redding claims that this is a way to balance the four characters and their unique move sets in a multiplayer setting. To quote him, “We’re building distinct ability trees for each character. They have to stick to gear sets. They have different styles of play. So we’re servicing that.”

Redding emphasized the difference between the four characters with regards to how they enter a fight. An enduring image that’s readily associated with costumed crimefighters from the comics is the image of one of them bursting through a window to interrupt a crime in progress, which is probably what Redding was picturing when he said that “they also have ways of kind of approaching and entering into the fray that is really distinctive and specific to each of them.” What these unique fight entrances look like has yet to be disclosed. Senior producer Fleur Marty also appeared to discuss cosmetics, confirming that each of the characters will have different costumes and gear. Furthermore, they won’t be cosmetic; some will have actual gameplay effects.

Gotham Knights is a pretty significant departure from the Batman video game experience fans are used to, and not just because fans can’t actually play as Batman. While previous games in the franchise have seen the caped crusader tackling a city full of crime all by himself, the four characters in Gotham Knights will have to use teamwork to take on Gotham’s villains together. The presence of distinct upgrade paths suggests a very deep experience and a real blast of a co-op game that should be a lot of fun to dive into when Gotham Knights releases next year.
