Gotham Season 3 Finale Brings About a Darker Jim Gordon

Gotham returned to the small screen this week after a hiatus of several months, and with seven episodes left of the third season, the show is starting to build toward the season 3 finale. In the latest episode ‘How The Riddler Got His Name’, Ed Nygma (Cory Michael Smith) descended into an insane killing spree while hallucinating the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) while Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) tried to figure out his long-lost uncle’s game plan with the Court of Owls.

It’s clear that this family connection is going to be a big part of the final battle, as Bruce (David Mazouz) faces off against the Court. Now, it seems that the show is set to get even darker in upcoming episodes, as the series EP teases the continued evolution of Jim Gordon. In addition, there are some promises of Bruce and Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) becoming more like their comic book counterparts.

Speaking to TVLine about the season finale, EP John Stephens emphasizes Gordon’s development, how he will have to go against his own family, and how that will change him by the end of the season.

“[Jim will] realize that he has sort of a family legacy with the Court of Owls, and he’ll have to choose against that to take it down… [Jim and Lee become] much darker, more dangerous, almost evil versions of themselves.”

Stephens also mentions both Bruce and Selina, teasing the ways in which they will change by season’s end.

“[Bruce] takes his biggest step forward yet to becoming the Dark Knight, [and Selina will] get her whip.”

Bruce’s next step is connected to a shaman, played by Raymond J. Barry, who will be instrumental in moving Bruce toward becoming the Dark Knight, potentially in a storyline connected to the appearance of Ra’s Al Ghul.

It’s certainly going to make fans happy to see Bruce becoming more like the Batman that everyone knows from the comics — although that full transformation is still a long way away. Giving Selina her whip will also be a major moment for comic fans, although she too has a long way to go before truly becoming Catwoman.

Meanwhile, the hint that Gordon will become even darker may not be met with as much enthusiasm. Gotham is already a very dark re-telling of the Batman mythos, and Gordon’s descent into further misery and even ‘evil’ may not appeal to everyone watching. As a character who started out as a (relatively) clear hero figure, is an evil Gordon really something that the show needs? Especially after Nathanial Barnes (Michael Chiklis) was turned evil earlier in the season by infected blood, it seems that the writers are keen to make every character a bad guy — and we’ve got a few weeks left to see how that will work.

Gotham returns next Monday with ‘These Delicate and Dark Obsessions’ at 8pm on FOX.
