Gotham star Ben McKenzie has previously spoken about his anti-crypto stance and recently offered some advice for celebrities who have gotten involved in cryptocurrency.
“Free advice for celebs who have profited from crypto: disclose how much you were paid, say you were sorry, and give the money to victims of crypto fraud,” McKenzie wrote on Twitter. “Career saved.” McKenzie has been a frequent critic of the world of cryptocurrency and has repeatedly spoken out against “crypto bros” and NFT (non-fungible tokens) culture. McKenzie is best known for his role as Ryan Atwood on The OC from 2003 to 2007 but also portrayed James Gordon on the Fox television series, Gotham, from 2014 to 2019.
“Oh, and given enough time we’re probably going to find out how much you [celebrities] were paid anyway,” McKenzie wrote in a follow-up tweet. “Just in case you want a little extra motivation to do the right thing.” The actor has partnered with journalist Jacob Silverman on a book titled Easy Money, which will explore cryptocurrency and fraud in depth.
In recent years, several celebrities have either promoted crypto or directly partnered with companies involved in the cryptocurrency space. This includes Matt Damon, who appeared in a 2022 Superbowl commercial for Crypto.com, Reese Witherspoon, Tom Brady and Kim Kardashian, among others.
Recently, Captain Marvel star Brie Larson received intense backlash after changing her profile photo on Twitter to an NFT from Flower Girls, which claims to donate 20% of its primary and secondary profits to a variety of children’s charities. The backlash against Larson stemmed from the controversy surrounding NFTs, namely concerns about environmental impact and plagiarism.
The video game industry has also seen plenty of action around the market, with major studios like Square Enix, Konami, EA and Ubisoft coming out in support of integrating NFTs and blockchain technology into gaming. In January, however, Ubisoft issued a statement blaming gamers for the poor performance of its NFT initiative.
“I think gamers don’t get what a digital secondary market can bring to them. For now, because of the current situation and context of NFTs, gamers really believe it’s first destroying the planet, and second just a tool for speculation,” said Ubisoft’s strategic innovations VP Nicolas Pouard. “But what we [at Ubisoft] are seeing first is the end game. The end game is about giving players the opportunity to resell their items once they’re finished with them or they’re finished playing the game itself.”
McKenzie and Silverman’s book, Easy Money, does not yet have a release date. All five seasons of Gotham are available to stream on Netflix.
