Gran Turismo Will Be Part Of FirstEver Virtual Olympics

Polyphony Digital’s Gran Turismo will be among the featured games in the Olympic Virtual Series, the first-ever e-sports event announced and supported by the International Olympic Committee. The event will run from May 13 through June 23 as a prelude to the Tokyo Olympic Games, which were originally scheduled for summer 2020 but postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The IOC has sometimes come under fire for being slow to acknowledge new sports, like snowboarding, which was added to the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. It has alternately been criticized for including activities some people don’t consider sports, like breakdancing, which is joining with the 2024 Paris Olympics. E-sports have been particularly controversial as there’s often little to no physical aspect, and it can be difficult to settle on specific games – a title popular during one Olympics could become irrelevant by the next. To date, there have been no digital events in the regular Olympics.

Gran Turismo’s involvement was highlighted by series producer Kaz Yamauchi on Twitter. The IOC is partnering with five International Sports Federations (IFs), which will host digital versions of baseball, cycling, rowing, sailing, and of course auto racing. Along those lines, other games will include Virtual Regatta and Konami’s eBaseball Powerful Pro Baseball 2020. Zwift will offer the closest thing to real-world competition since it tracks stationary indoor bikes. The format of events will vary from organization to organization.

For Gran Turismo, the IF of choice is the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile, or FIA. Details of its event are still unrevealed, but the IOC says that the aim is to maximize “online mass participation,” including people at home or in dedicated training facilities. The broader goal is to encourage e-sports and forge ties with gaming communities, which can then be used to promote the Olympics, especially among younger people. Reaching that group is critical not just for securing an audience, but recruiting new athletes, since they often have to start training in their teens or early 20s to reach peak performance.

FIFA, the International Basketball Federation, the International Tennis Federation, and even World Taekwondo have pledged their interest in future editions of the Olympic Virtual Series. While that could mean games like EA’s FIFA and 2K’s NBA will join the roster, it’s not clear how taekwondo would be represented. The martial art is present in fighting games like Tekken, but there’s no popular title that uses it exclusively.

Polyphony’s game of choice for 2021 will have to be Gran Turismo Sport for the PS4. Gran Turismo 7 was announced in June 2020 but delayed into 2022 because of pandemic-related production obstacles. That title is expected to be a showcase for the PS5, not just as an exclusive but in taking full advantage of the console’s graphics power.
